I honestly don't understand the hate for the new Stormtroopers. In 20 years the uniforms changed from the Republic soldiers to the Stormtroopers of the OT. In another 20 years they've changed to this. Wow what a big deal.

people do give a shit about details even in big budget CGI extravaganza's, see LOTR and Avatar.
JJ's approach is just easier as you don't have to carefully estimate the amount of wear and tear on every creature, costume and makeup effect to make sure you don't go overboard. it's a time-saving thing.

From a design perspective, I think the new suits are excellent. They are recogniseably stormtroopers but have a simple and striking "face" which is easy to remember and recognise.
Of course this has no impact on the quality of the movie, but the design department did a good job.
