They detract from the original, original is actually worse after viewing the sequels because you can never rewatch them without that context. He went the distance with Apollo but that doesn't mean anything because he beats his ass in the next movie.
It's the same deal with Rambo, if you take that first one and ignore the sequels and ignore the changed ending to set up the sequels it's a legit top 10 movie.
