I liked that. It's got two worlds touching that don't often get to interact with each other; that being and insider in the Hollywood machine and indie critics who make film primarily driven by the love of movies that showed them what movies are capable of.
I didn't that American Ultra was shit, it was competent at best, maybe a little too trying-to-build-a-franchisey for my taste, but it wasn't anything that I'd probably watch again. That being said, it took a lot of balls to go on RLM and discuss that nature of the beast with Mike and Jay after they'd given Max a negative review.
I'll probably never seek out his films but I do have a little respect for the guy now. Also, it would be fun to see more sausage grinders on RLM.

In all of the controversy I thought Landis had directed Ultra, but it was actually Nima Nourizadeh of Project X "fame".
And having seen it, I can honestly sympathize with Landis somewhat when he indirectly hinted at how something small like the wrong tone can fuck up a movie. Because some of the casting and tonal inconsistencies in both direction and editing really hinder it from being the ok movie which it probably would have been in more capable hands, which is something decided on by the producers and not the screenwriter.

Or maybe they don't have much room to talk seeing as how Max won't shut the fuck up. That's the most grating part of this entire review; the guy obviously thinks he's the hottest shit in the room to the point where he's not even letting his hosts get a word in. Jay's trying to keep things as grounded as he can, but you can tell Mike is regretting this the more Max continues to babble on.
I don't think he's being awkward, I genuinely think he just hates the guy and knows that it would be better/funnier to keep quiet and let him dig his hole deeper.
