Its not depressing, just frustrating in its mixed messages.The early scenes imply that her not wanting/loving this baby made him a sociopath, or that her latent hatred of him makes her imagine it, but then he becomes so obviously insane that everything early on doesn't work anymore. They either failed at making her an unreliable narrator, didn't understand the subtext of the opening scenes, or didn't care by the end.

It's a dumb ass movie about an insecure weak willowy mother who shows no affection for her kid, nor disciplines them.
There's a scene where she walks in on Kevin masturbating and he gives her eye contact for like 20 seconds (not stopping) until she closes the door.
