I think when you're watching a show, you tolerate body count pretty easily. It just becomes a part of the action, and it sets the tone for the scene depending on how its shown.
I didn't even watch the movie because this scene was the only thing that I ever heard about it and I cut the tab within fifteen seconds because to me it just looked like some guy trying to act all slick while murdering innocents.
There's a reason why zombie movies exist, so that you can get the heroes just pounding away at human-yet-inhuman shapes of meat. They're zombies so its okay to be cool about it.
