She's famous for being a sort-of hot, sort-of quirky nerd girl. She's acted in a number of things and written/produced/etc. a few others.
Most of her nerd cred (I think) comes from The Guild and Dr. Horrible.
She reminds me quite a lot of this girl I used to be infatuated with, so the first few seasons of The Guild leave me stricken with a boner that never quits. That being said, if her Twitter feed is anything to go by she's fully into the SJW cult. Not as bad as some others but still too annoying to follow.

The Guild is basically about a WoW guild that gets together and does a few things IRL. Nothing serious, a little bit of shallow comedic drama but if you've got half an hour to kill, give the first episode or two a shot. It started out as a web series and it shows, moreso in the beginning than later.
Dr. Horrible was written by Joss Whedon (or his brother, or both of them, I can't remember) during the writer's strike a few years back, so it's a bit... Whedony. It's also a musical. I liked it but then I kinda like some cheesy shit.

I'd say it's more a function of becoming uglier and thus less valuable to the world, though obviously aging is going to play a pretty big role in that. It happens to fat chicks and other 'undesirables' sooner, while they're still young.
