I really enjoyed this, even separated from the whole "cinematic masterpiece, muh camerawork" shit it still stands on it's own as a story and also paved the way for everything that came after it.

The Lost Weekend is better than anything Welles ever made.

Nah. Good though, a cute romantic comedy that has aged much better than Some Like It Hot.
Sunset Blvd. will always be my favorite of his though, that one is really a contender with Citizen Kane in my book. Double Indemnity is also great fun, though a bit outdated. And he all but outdid Hitchcock with Witness for the Prosecution, or at least mimicked him so masterfully people kept walking up to 'ol Hitch himself to congratulate him for it.

Anyone who dismisses The Apartment as a "cute romantic comedy" has no idea what they're talking about. It's impeccably staged, perfectly acted and boasts one of the finest screenplays ever written, blending humor and pathos better than any film I've ever seen. It's on par with the best of Wilder's work and the best of anyone's.

No, esteemed film magazine Sight & Sound said so, trough a poll conducted every decade since 1952 that includes pretty much every film scholar, critic or film maker of note open for participation around the world.
Kane held the top spot from 1962 to 2002, which only goes to show the regard it is held in, its historical significance and the general fact that it's just considered a damn good film by those who make films their livelihood.
It wasn't until 2012 that Vertigo (a steady climber) finally surpassed it on that list, but Kane still remains firm in second place. Current top 10 is as follows if you're interested:

01. Vertigo (191 mentions)
02. Citizen Kane (157 mentions)
03. Tokyo Story (107 mentions)
04. La Règle du jeu (The Rules of the Game) (100 mentions)
05. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (93 mentions)
06. 2001: A Space Odyssey (90 mentions)
07. The Searchers (78 mentions)
08. Man with a Movie Camera (68 mentions)
09. The Passion of Joan of Arc (65 mentions)
10. 8½ (64 mentions)

With closest runner-up being Battleship Potemkin (63 mentions).

Anon, a cute romantic comedy is a hard thing to make or come by. I was in no way dismissing it, it's one of Wilder's greats, but it's also just a movie. Now, I disagree with you that it's on par with Citizen Kane, hell, I wouldn't even consider it Wilder's best work, but it's still a hell of a movie in my book. And it just goes to show how well crafted it is that it still works with a date after all these years.

Any scholar or critic of note has well moved passed that without even trying. You're wrong in thinking that you'll become a patrician by staying away from the most entry level of entry level. Hell, half of those obscure movies you've never heard of are in some way commenting on entry level patrician stuff that has landed on IMDB top 250 trough more valid critic polls. For every Batflick and Guardians of the Memmeverse, there's at least one flick you need to have seen to be taken seriously.

>muh themes and blue curtains
Start an Apartment thread or open up a dialog if you want a deeper discussion of the film. Quickly summarized, it's a cute romantic comedy, hot on the heals of the farcical Some Like It Hot!, with the tagline "Movie-wise, there has never been anything like "The Apartment" - laugh-wise, love-wise, or otherwise-wise". It may have changed your life or whatever, but it's still overall a cute, romantic comedy with an "all's well that ends well" type ending. That said, Jack Lemmon is really good in it and he perfectly captures the all but suicidal desperation of trying to hold onto your sanity within a shit career, even though his situation is overly farcical.
>>
>>62993996
>muh anti-intellectualism

You're the most disgusting kind of pleb.
>>
>>62993751
The Apartment isn't that comedic either. It's more of a dramedy, and has some really depressing moments. The only major difference would the endings, which obviously are very different. Of course, if it weren't for the Production Code, Casablanca would have had a happy ending as well.
>>
>>62994069
What a well thought out, intellectual response.

>>62994076
Well, sure, it's got a dramatic element to it, but at the level of a Futurama episode in the sense that, even though "shit gets real" so to speak, it's overall too absurdist and farcical to be digested in a realist way. Comparing it to Casablanca which has a much more dryer, somber tone to it with a very real war going on in the background just doesn't seem like an apt comparison. Also, I doubt that Billy "Brass Balls" Wilder was fighting internally for a more harrowing ending to keep up with its more sombre moments; The man that made a film in the early 50s criticizing the studio system within the studio system, and another late 50s with crossdressers and subtle allusions to gay acceptance, made exactly the film he wanted to make with The Apartment, meet cute and feel good ending and all.

Ha, you're talking about Billy Wilder, one of the main forces behind the fall of the Hollywood Production Code. He fought tooth and nail to keep all sorts of banned material in his films, far moreso than Michael Curtiz or Warner Brothers ever did.

He liked happy endings, so what? Every frame of that movie is glorious, and the performances are legendary. Also Wilder and Diamond were still in their honeymoon phase, and basically shitting gold

Godfather 1 and 2 used to make the top ten, but they made a new rule where you couldn't count two movies as one entry. They both dropped down to the twenties or thirties.

"Best movie ever made" is subjective. I could start a thread declaring Flesh Gordon 2 to be the best movie ever made, and that opinion would be no more or less valid than the opinion that you've chosen to waste board space to dedicate an entire thread to.

>>62994924

I decide what's valid, and I've decided that my favorite movie, Flesh Gordon 2, is the greatest movie ever made.
>>

It doesn't matter what you decide because I've already decided that everything you say is wrong.
>>
>>62994810
nice i'll have to check it out. It's gotta be one of the greatest, definitely my favourite movie
>>
>>62994993

You've personally decided that for yourself, but that doesn't objectively make it so.
>>
>>62994864
I'm not the OP, but I am 57 years old, and I have seen a lot of movies, from the 1930s to today. I would say I have seen more movies than anyone on /tv/ just by having had more life time being alive, more than anyone on /tv/ has had.

That being said, Citizen Kane could be the best film ever made. I would not get in a argument with someone who was definite in their decision, I will put it that way. I have a pretty objective judgement of film quality by the sheer amount of films I have seen, and CK would be a very good choice if I had to pick the best out of everything I have seen.

That was just the official explanation, what Welles was really getting at, what really drew Randolph Hearst's ire was that he was playing with a rumor that Hearst reportedly called his mistresses vagina "rosebud" while giving her cunnilingus, a rumor Hearst was aware of, true or not.

>>
>>62993170
It isn't. Wilder has some amazing films like Ace in the Hole and Avanti, but Welles is better. Welles is just the best there has ever been.
>>
>>62993453
Each S&S list is basically a snapshot of who the current crop of top critics consider the best films ever as as such reflects current taste rather than a universal sense of what's really the best. after all both Vertigo and Citizen Kane have existed for a while, it's not like Vertigo suddenly become better after the fact or Kane a little worse.
So in my autism to create an actual all time best list, I actually made a list aggregating the ranking each film has gotten thought time which should be a more stable overview of which films are considered best. I don't have it with me right now, but several decades would have to pass before you can really say more critics have considered Vertigo a better film than Kane.
