Rivette films have lots of long scenes of people talking. Actually, most French films do, lol.
La Haine
Le Trou
Shoot the Piano Player
le cercle rouge
Melville films would be a good start, they usually don't speak that much so you will not be lost. Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge and L'Armée des Ombres are the usual start, you should watch Bob le Flambeur too.
Otherwise...
Jean Renoir films (La Grande Illusion and La Règle du jeu are must-watch), Bresson (only saw Au Hasard Balthazar and Un Condamnée à mort s'est échappé, but can recommend both), Truffaut (400 coups, Dernier Métro).
Le Trou is very good too.
Mr Bean's Holiday

His best film is, ironically, extremely wordy and discursive.

Fair enough. Just curious. I know plenty of people who took french for their foreign language credit, but never as a serious interest.
Good luck then OP.

It's not a bad movie. Not a masterpiece but it will show OP the current state of France.

>Les Inconnus
I'm not a fan of their film output.
Their TV skits were fucking great though.
They have put a bunch of them on youtube.
