Just finished this. Thought it was alright, it struck more or less the right balance of adapting the book and doing their own thing, in my opinion.
The weakest parts were around episodes 3-4 or so, the entire Marshal subplot felt like it dragged somewhat, and the lead heroine was stupendously boring.
But the strength of the show was in its atmosphere, and in its supporting cast, and the political maneuvering between the Japanese and the Nazis. The events of latter half of the final episode were particularly GOAT, and characters like Smith, Wegener, Kido, and Tagomi were great no matter what scenes they were in.
Anyone else watched this, or is everyone busy watching Jessica Jones?

He has personal experience, his wife mentions that he and his family lost everything in the Great Depression (which he blames on the self-serving individualism and decadence that America exemplified before the war). By comparison, the stable and prosperous society that the National Socialist States of America offers, and its attitude of placing family, community, state, and duty ahead of oneself, must seem to him like worth the price that was paid to build it.
His devotion to these ideals is also part of how he handles his past involvement in the extermination camps. He clearly struggled with it internally just like Wegner (you don't go sailing anymore?) but whereas Wegner retreated from his beliefs, John doubled down on the "the ends justified the means" and "emotion cannot stand in the way of duty" thing. To him, this was the price that had to be paid to create the techno-paradise they live in.

Juliana is so fucking irritating. Her motivations do not match up with the lengths that she goes to for them.
Her life seems comfortable enough, she's not starving or suffering or being abused in some way that would make her so desperate to chase the films as some kind of ill-defined "way out".
If her life was absolute shit, and everyone she loves is dead or something, then yeah it would make kind of sense that she's willing to throw everything away to find a way out because she has nothing left to lose and death is preferable to her current circumstances. That's not the case.
Instead she's just caught up in some kind of self-important bullshit about "who would I be if my dad didn't die in the war?".
Then she doesn't learn at all from the part where three innocent people were exterminated because of her actions. This would have been the perfect time for her to take stock of how her obsession with the origin of the film has consequences beyond what she's prepared to deal with, but for circumstances to force her back into the game. But instead it seems like she just doesn't care who dies because of her, and she lies to Frank about her activities with psychopathic ease.
And then she can't even be consistent. She's desperate enough for answers that she's apparently prepared to risk torture and death to infiltrate the Nippon Building. The Resistance woman tells her that this is a job for someone with a deathwish and she assents. But then when it's implied to her that she may have to perform sexual favors to get what she needs, she turns around and runs away. This is not the action of someone who is driven to the kind of desperation that you'd expect when they're prepared to give up their life and the lives of others to get what they want.
Juliana is the worst character on this show. Worse even than Ed, whose character consists solely of telling Frank to do the opposite of whatever he wants to do at the time.

Actually, Philip K. Dick may have had a plan for 'The Grasshopper Lies Heavy', however in the original novel the grasshopper is a novel within a novel.
Spotniz opted for a news reel within a tv show because a because it would be hard to place a book in the plot of the show.
However, the tv show is far longer than the book, and Spotniz needed a way of continuing the plot line. So, essentially, he's just using the grasshopper as a plot device that will likely never be explained.

I actually wondered before watching the show what actor they were going to give the role to.
In the novel, his characterization is HEAVILY based on the narration of his thoughts. I did not think that any actor could pull it off.
But the dude they gave it to did. He's a perfect depiction of the novel's character.
