I was just as upset as you about the mother being killed off like that. She was responsible for a lot of the heart in the first movie.
I actually think that the romantic subplot weighed the first movie down. Blart is better off as a loner dedicated to his work. There's more opportunities for adventures that way.
I thought the sequel was funnier and faster moving. Paul has a unique way of speaking that's quite poetic. He proved that he should have been the original keynote speaker all along! It's interesting that he's just as arrogant as he is timid. The funniest parts for me are when he thinks the hotel manager is flirting with him, and he literally closes the door in her face! I much prefer the subplots outside of the crime fighting, where they elaborate on the relationship between father and daughter. I think the two have great chemistry. I think more could be done with the franchise, such as video-games and a sitcom!
