They actually pulled it off the right way, which surprised me. People thought it would be bad writing because we'd get a pointless rescue episode that ends in Glenn getting successfully saved like we were expecting. Then more people thought it would be bad writing because other people told them it would be.
This was solid writing. We all knew Glenn would live, so they did it in a no drama way. Matter of fact, quick scene at the beginning of the episode. They cut the crap we were expecting them to have and used Nicholas's suicide and Glenn's survival as a vehicle to a new story arch. Glenn's redemption to himself for failing to mentor Nicholas and recognizing part of himself in Enid after she saved him like he saved Rick. Now he and Maggie will become her surrogate parents like with Sophia in the comics.
This also adds a new level of audience attachment to Glenn. He's no longer survivor nice guy and Maggie's husband, he's got the father, mentor, and family-man role as well. This will make his character as loved as in the comics and get a lot of the spotlight that Daryl took.
Also, I love the hypocrisy of the elitist viewers. The Daryl in the wilderness episode is critically liked and made people love him since he escaped from almost certain death with an arrow in his side. He also grew strong and more group inclined instead of being a cool but weak lone wolf. They did the exact same thing here, but it's called bad writing because people were expecting it to be poorly executed, which is wasn't.
