Not that anon but Cosmopolis and Maps were both incredible, strange, singular films. No one is making films like him these days.
>>
>>62974768
I had already watched inceptions.
though it has interesting idea but not like it's deep or anything
Nolan always spoonfeed the audience, nothing too deep or subtlety left to think about or wonder in the future. he gave everything away in his film.
let's A lead to A.
and he presented the A with just visually enough to entertain audience.

he made entertaining movie, but that's it. no more, no less in term of its artistic merit etc.

his movies not worthy enough for repeated viewings (except for memento. some people said inception, but I though Inception is pretty simple. no need 2nd viewing for me thanks.)

at his best, Nolan is watered down Kubrick.

stop with this meme b8 nolan hurrdurr deep shit desu

shouldnt even be in the same sentence

Nolan is absolutely nothing compared to Kubrick
>>
>>62975119
I agree with the strange and singular, but that doesn't mean it's good, it's new, right, but terrible, he should go back to the old ways

I've only seen three Malick pictures, Thin Red Line, Tree of Life and Badlands and always just on tv when I wasn't expecting it. Every time they blew me away, Badlands was on the other night and it's insane that that was his first film. It's everything that made Barry Lyndon Kubrick's best film but refined far beyond it. It's horrifying really if you think about it.
>>
>>62975340

1. Nostalghia
2. Mirror
3. The Sacrifice
4. Andrei Rublev
5. Stalker
6. Solaris
7. Ivan's Childhood

Not being a contrarian, I legitemately feel this way. Tarkovsky never made a bad or mediocre film, but I really don't understand why everyone gravitates towards Stalker. It's a wonderful film, but nothing close to the sheer emotional and spiritual power of Mirror, Nostalghia, and Sacrifice. I honestly fear it may just be the low-fi sci-fi that draws people in, because people can't let go of genre when it should have nothing to do with a film. That's honestly why Stalker is more succesful than Solaris, but it's still tied down to the genre in a few ways.
>>
>>62981038
Stalker and Solaris seems to be the most popular since they're also the most accessible (well I guess Ivan's Childhood is his most accessible but noone see's that as their first Tarkovsky)
>>
>>62981114

Maybe. Ivan's Childhood is definitely most accessible, buy maybe what draws people to Solaris and Stalker is not only the twists on the genre, but the apparent grace of the films. The way the camera moves, the quietness, the lingering movements of the actors and their clear motivations. This is maybe why people don't fondly remember the protagonist of Nostalghia, because his interests and motivations are pent up to where we don't see them with our eyes ("feelings left unsaid are unforgettable.")

With a filmmaker like Tarkovsky, I feel like his films demand a purely unconscious and emotional approach, and with the way characters are expository and blatant about their thoughts and feelings in Solaris and Stalker, people gravitate towards them because they can only consciously experience things.

That all probably sounds dumb, but it baffles me how people can put Stalker and Solaris so high above the rest.
