I had a conversation recently about the bakeries getting in trouble/put out of business for not making cakes for gay weddings, bringing up the walmart not making nazi cakes as an (obviously extreme) example of the cherrypicking in regards to who is right and wrong and it was essentially taken as "you're a bigot who hates gays". I clearly stated that I lean towards supporting gay rights, but the marriage issue is a big grey area for me, because I can see both sides. I calmly reasoned that it's a tough issue to work around and both sides need to really talk about what those types of changes are going to mean for society and how both sides can come to some sort of an agreement that is amenable to both. Sounded reasonable to me, was responded to with anger and frustration and eventually, just silence.

I haven't followed the marriage thing at all. But wherever it may be, this is the ultimate end-point for it in my view.
In the end, the word "marriage" will be simply a religious word attached to the legal binding of two people in law. This binding will be more universally called a "civil union" basically marriage in everything but name. A civil union will carry all the legal horse-hockey that binds one person to another including if those people separate.
If a religious institution (or bakery) doesn't want to provide marriage services to a couple then fuck it, they have the freedom to ruin their own reputation, that is what makes our country great, you can say whatever you like because it lets us identify the fuckwads easier. Couples will still be able to access all the legal entitlements of a civil union through other means. If religious institutions want to own the word then let them. If couples demand use of that word, then they need to wake the fuck up and stop caring because it's just a word, the practical aspects will be more than readily available.
This is amazing, they say we want to be equal and treated the same as everyone else. So most people feel this way and they put a trans joke in there to show that they don't think they are weird but are accepted enough that we can joke about them( you know like friends make fun of each other).
