I actually think the racism/sexism on Mad Men was well done and avoided being overstated. It frequently acted only as a backdrop for other plot points, occasionally being relevant to a major plot point but otherwise just being there for worldbuilding in the same way as the smoking and drinking. And yes, of course historical shows will want to highlight contrasts between their era and our current one, which is part of why I found Mad Men's avoidance of overstating it so impressive.
It also portrayed its female characters in a an equally negative light to any of its other characters - something which fail to remember any other recently produced series doing.
It also had an all-white lead cast, with no shoehorning of ethnic minority characters into a lead role. Even in supporting roles the characters were fleshed out a hell of a lot better than every other show with 'ethnic minority supporting character #4' wandering around the plot.

There were tons of historical movies during 2000's after Gladiator. You probably hated all of them with the exception of Kingdom of Heaven's Director's Cut.
