The difference is that had they not dropped the bomb, the Allies would still have had the manpower and materiel and logistical capability to launch an invasion of the Japanese home islands
They'd been painstakingly building up to this by island hopping across the Pacific, and capturing Okinawa to use as a staging ground for an invasion of Kyushu so they could use it to stage air support for an invasion of Kanto.
And had this gone ahead, using the invasion of Okinawa as a representative example, the casualties on both the Japanese and Allied sides would have been absolutely horrendous because they'd have been fighting both a fanatical and hostile military fighting to the death as well as a fanatical and hostile civilian population fighting to the death. Guys does the story get better after ep1? I saw the pilot a few days ago and it just seems completely retarded to someone who speaks German and knows history (namely the goals of the Germans and Japs going into the war).
Throughout the show it's mentioned that Hitler is in ill health and possibly has Parkinsons due to his shaking hands. He's even shown on a newsreel with a hand in his pocket.
Yet when we see him on screen he has no problem working a projector and even talks down a would be assassin clamly.

I thought about the reason why Hitler doesn't want to overtake the Pacific States and Japan/ East Asia and I feel that he just wants to give the Greater Reich stability and spare it's citizens another war. There is no need for a Global Expansion. What good would it be, if they overtook Japan? Even considering the Reich wins, they'd still have heavy losses due to the Japanese mentality. It'd ultimately strenghen the anti-regime movements and probably would enspark a civil war.

The point was that America isn't being subjugated by the Nazis and beaten into obedience, but rather that National Socialism has simply integrated disturbingly comfortably into the existing American society, and has built a stable and strong and prosperous state at the cost of exterminating everyone they don't like or driving them to the neutral zone.
By comparison the Japanese occupied Pacific States are less rigorous about enforcing the race laws than the Nazis. So we see Jews living there and the authorities largely ignore them if they keep their heads down where in the Nazi States they'd make more of an effort to wipe them out. But Japan is not as technologically advanced as Germany, and everyone non Japanese is oppressed equally.

Philip K Dick wrote a wonderful alternative history that allowed the reader to imagine very dark events, but the show has done little to build on the original premise.
The characters’ motivations largely make no sense, acting half-heartedly. It feels like the script leaves no room for authentic emotion, focusing instead on having the characters do whatever it takes to move the plot.
Juliana continually acts in a grotesquely irresponsible way. Even after Frank’s family has paid with their lives for her actions, she still continues her poorly explained obsession with wanting "answers". She repeatedly betrays his trust, only for him to react with forgiveness. She lies about her work for the resistance with a psychopathic ease. She similarly takes advantage of the grace shown her by Tagomi.
Ed suffers from the lack of any consistent personality. He shifts from resolved to weak, astute to naive, without any explanation. The writers bypass the work of establishing Ed and Frank's friendship, skipping to an awkward dynamic whereby Ed persistently pesters Frank to undertake or avoid an action. We never know why.
But the show’s cardinal flaw is that it fails to explore the ways that an occupation of the US might have affected its culture, society, etc.
For example, in Pacific States, nearly all the Japanese characters speak perfect English, but the Americans speak little Japanese. Given the Japanese policies in other occupied territories (e.g. Taiwan, Korea and parts of China), you'd expect they would be forced to speak Japanese and adopt Japanese cultural practices. This bothers me too, but ultimately it's a TV show made for a largely english speaking audience so have German/Japanese subtitles all the time would make so sense. John Smith would definitely have to speak more than passing German given his rank and experience.
The biggest reason I think everyone likes watching the Nazis/Japs is because there are big things at stake and characters have clear goals.

Juliana is so fucking irritating, literally nothing she does makes any sense. Her life seems comfortable enough, she's not starving or suffering or being abused in some way that would make her so desperate to chase the films as some kind of ill-defined "way out". She's just caught up in some kind of self-important bullshit about "who would I be if my dad didn't die in the war?" and hasn't learned at all from the part where three innocent people were exterminated because of her actions. Every moment she was on screen just made me want to skip ahead.
It all felt so fake too. She claims she's willing to give up her life to track down a lead in the Nippon Building, but then it turns out she's not even willing to give up blowjobs. Her motivations stink of halfheartedness, or shallowness, or just plain thrillseeking.
