When I was a kid I'd see Hellraiser VHS in the video store and I looked at the back of the case and I'd heard about other than pinhead some fat cenobite guy and another one always chattering his teeth, so I conjured weird backstories for these two expecting them to be real characters in the films. I thought the fat one was like a horrible cannibal cenobite who ate humans, and the other one was like a nutcase who loved biting people, but then I watched the film this year and they're literally just there. they pop up. hey it's them. the film ends. there's no development. i just got some shitty soap opera style drama about a dude with no skin hiding in an attic for 90 minutes.
>>62927801
Maybe Dante's Divine Comedy.
>mfw people don't get why it's called a comedy
>>62927806
the cenobites have become so iconic and so synonymous with hellraiser that i think it must really throw off modern audiences when they watch the first movie and it's really about frank and julia
but that's what makes the cenobites so effective and memorable in the first movie: they weren't overexposed.
>>62928014
>they weren't overexposed
nigga, they weren't even lightly grilled. we barely saw the fuckers.
>>62927211

That's not how it works retards.
The last Hellraiser movie I saw was the internet one really couldn't get into it honestly surprised how many sequels this series spawned considering I don't ever remember the movies being that popular other than the Pinhead character

At the end of the original film, the cycle repeats-the box is offered to a new customer.
I have never been able to verify this, but I believe that the new customer is (portrayed by the same actor who portrayed) the light-skinned black Doctor from the middle of the film, who had the box in his possession for a bit before returning it to Kirsty - just long enough to get curious about it. The hair and facial structure look about right, but it's dark so I can't positively ID: "Raul Newney" was the doctor, but no commentary about "The second customer".
If true, this is a nice touch since it foreshadows doctor/man of science interest in the box for the sequel.
>>62927041
It's a shame the sequal beyond 2 were such shit. They went from mysterious *entities* to "hurrrr ebil demons".
Pinhead in Space was the bomb though

>>62928014
The Cenobites worked so well because their screentime was limited. You were given just enough information to understand that they are a force of nature from a different world, they have completely alien morality, their leader has presence out the wazoo, and they are bad news. We don't know what they actually are, who they are, *why* they are. They are executed well enough to be fascinating because they are wrapped up in lore that we only scratch the surface of.
>>62929325
muh autisticfu
Kirsty > Julia.
>>62926275
I've always wondered why Hellraiser has acupuncture on his head.
The comic book they put out a few years ago was fucking incredible, and a great way to ignore the sequels.
The chick from the first film ends up as the new Pinhead, and you learn that Pinhead's boss Leviathan, who is mentioned a few times in the films, is just the boss of that particular hell. Like, there are other hell dimensions that have different themes, ruled by other demons.
It was kinda cool.
>>62932176

>>62932335
It's been almost ten years since I last saw these movies, but here we go:
>Hellraiser (1987)
5.5/10
+imaginative and somewhat innovative
+set/costume design
+creepy relatives
-could've been more polished in terms of story, pace, editing etc
>Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)
3.5/10
+aim (widening the story universe)
+set location (mental hospitals are underused in the genre)
-confusing plot
-somewhat silly ending
>Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992)
2.5/10
+funny cenobites
-not rememberable at all
>Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996)
3/10
+interesting concept
+relative good first half
-acting
-cheap
-baaad second half
>Hellraiser: Inferno (2000)
3.5/10
+somewhat scary
+main actor
+concept
-unpolished
-no real relation to the former stories
>Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002)
3.5/10
+Ashley
+psychological horror
-execution based on concept
>Hellraiser: Deader (2005)
2/10
+investigating journalism
-concept
-story
-execution
>Hellraiser: Hellworld (2005)
2/10
-teen slasher
-unrelated story
-acting

I'd wife the shit out of that.
The first 2 or 3 are pretty good movies and Pinhead in space is also a lot of fun (although not as good as Leprechaun in space). The other sequels are horrible, though, except maybe the one with Bishop.
Event Horizon was also pretty much a good Hellraiser film.

Hellraiser 3: Why On Earth?
>>62939457
Only good thing about 3 was that scene where the club douche bangs the blonde with the tits. I fapped my dick raw to that.
I've only seen the first Hellraiser, but I have to say Pinhead did not stand out amongst the other Cenobites in the movie other than having the most lines.
Skinless Frank was the star monster of the movie anyway and the Cenobites were easily defeated by a young girl.
>>62931903
>The Cenobites worked so well because their screentime was limited.
That doesn't make it good or interesting, we barely saw them and didn't get anything about them other than they're from some hell dimension, by that logic anyone can make good characters by only making them show up for a few minutes with almost zero info about them. Look at Donnie Darko, that film does the ''limited exposure'' thing much better.
>>62935301
>Hellraiser 3 not rememberable at all
what about the part where the girl's skin gets sucked off and then swallowed by a statue?
>>62927883

Pinhead was "Lead Cenobite" in Hellraiser. He *wasn't* all that important. Doug Bradley, the costumers, even Barker directing him just knocked their scenes out of the park that they became more important in the sequels.
The Cenobites were a cog in the machine that is Hellraiser. They were not any more important to the big picture than the box, the hallway monster, people returning from Hell through floorboards, bums who transform into bone dragons, or chinamen.
the first two were great. haven't got around to watching the others.
