ITT: Jokes you never ever understood

It's just a morbid name for a hospital, you die and you go to hell
>>
>>62918813
A pass to hell?
>>
>>62918813
◾Its name is ironic, implying that all patients have a "pass to Hell". Most people would hope for a hospital to prevent death as opposed to guaranteeing it.

It's a shitty hospital. What's not to get?

You realize this is a cartoon and not a fucking documentary right? There are no coincidences going on here.

pic related is a joke about Fermat's Last Theorem

basically Fermat said back in the 1600s that a^x+b^x=c^x can't happen if x>2 and a,b,c and x are all positive integers. it wasn't proven that he was right until pretty recently.

this equation seems to provide a solution to the equation, and when you plug it into a calculator it appears to work. it doesn't, it appears to do so on calculators because they can only display a certain amount of digits, more than the solution requires.

i haven't been into math in forever pls don't judge if i fucked up something

Math major here. I can explain this one.
At the time this joke was written, most calculators that people would have at home would only display 8 or 9 digits.

I'm not sure when that episode came out, but Fermat's Last Theorem, which says that x^n + y^n = z^n has no positive integer solutions for n bigger than or equal to 2, was proved in 1994 - 400 years after it was formulated by Pierre de Fermat.
So basically, what he wrote on the board is wrong. You only need to know Fermat's Last Theorem to check it, without calculating it.
However, if someone tried to calculate those three large numbers on a standard 90s home calculator, you'd get the same number.

And it'd be shocking, because you aren't supposed to be able to do that. But of course, the issue is that they agree to 8 or 9 places, and you wouldn't see the remaining digits that don't agree since the calculator doesn't have enough places.
>>
>>62927160
Do I have to say it again? The solution homer wrote on the blackboard is a seemingly valid solution to previously thought impossible to solve mathematical problem. The fact that homer (whos main character trait is that hes dim witted) could even come close to solving it, is the joke.
>>
>>62927214
>>62927220
It's not a seemingly valid solution. I tried it out with my own home calculator (not a compter) and it returned a non-zero answer.
So what is the joke? There isn't one.
>>
>>62926971
I love Numberphile. It's the Top Gear of maths.
>>
>>62921102

Buy the DVD. Watch the commentary.
>>
>>62927252
Try using a calculator from the 90s (when the episode came out) that could only display 8 or 9 digits. Do you really not get the joke by now? Homer's solution is a near miss solution, a solution thats close but not quite right

>>62927252
Are you a fucking retard? I said do it on an old 90s home calculator (the kind that would only display 8 digits, and possibly have extra memory for one digit off screen). The numbers agree to 10 decimal places, so anyone trying this when the episode came out would get tripped up for a second.
Obviously you won't get a nonzero solution because it's not a valid equality.
Jesus fucking Christ, learn some reading comprehension.
>>
>>62927309
>near miss solution
It either is a solution or isn't. This isn't.
I don't care how many "hip" mathematicians you link that get an erection over something that was wrong, it doesn't excuse the fact that there's not an actual joke in that scene.
There is nothing funny.
>>62927342
Like I said, I did it with a home calculator. Mine only displays 9 digits but returns a non-zero answer when the entire string is input.
It's not a solution to anything, it's not a joke, it's just someone trying to be smart and failing miserably.

This scene and those retards from Numberphile are the height of pretension.

>>62927421

>>
>>62927396
>It either is a solution or isn't. This isn't.

http://www.math.harvard.edu/~elkies/ferm.html
>>
>>62927483
None of this proves or refutes Fermat's last theorem, so is irrelevant. When it's wrong, it's wrong. There's nothing "near" about it.
>>
>>62926182
The joke is that the answer would look correct to 10 decimal places. On an ordinary calculator you wouldn't see the final digits that prove it's wrong.
David S Cohen put it in to fuck with people who'd recognise it and try it out.

The top equation is/was used for predicting the mass of the Higgs Boson particle.

The second we know.

The third concerns the density of the universe. The joke here is that > means the universe will eventually implode under its own weight. Then there's an implosion in the basement so he reverses it to < which'd mean the universe expands infinitely. Immediately followed by a bigger explosion. The actual joke here being that Homer has created TWO universes to test this theory.

The fourth line refers to topology.

That episode aired in 1998. Most home calculators at the time held no more than 10 digits. If you put the problem into the calculator you get a correct solution. You only realize it's not correct if you know about the theorem, or had access to a higher quality calculator.

a^1+b^1=c^1 works
a^2+b^2=c^2 works (pythagoreom theorem)

and for the longest time anything higher than 2 was hard to find a solution for. Fermat had a book on maths that he wrote notes in, and one of the notes said he proved that there was no solution for a^x+b^x=c^x when x is a positive integer greater than 2. he didn't write the proof because he says there wasn't enough room.

a lot of mathematicians thought he was either bullshitting, or thought he found a solution that wasn't correct (but since he worked alone nobody was able to check it). it's taken up until the late 90s if i remember correctly to prove that there was no solution.

tl;dr guy said something couldn't happen, it took 300 years to prove he was right

>>
>>62928248
First of all, pythagorus theorem, namely that a^2+b^2 = c^2 where a and b are two sides of a triangle and c the hypotenus is very useful in trigonometry and is very EVERYWHERE in science and math.

Math is all about asking questions about why, how and well then what. in other words, you think of a basic concept, grind it down to it's most basic ideas (or axioms) and think about properties and results of other assumptions ont he system

Naturally mathematicans wanted to learn about such a popular formula, which works for powers of 2 and 1 (for any a and b there exists a c such that a+b =c) and ask about higher powers. I'm not a math major (physics) so i don't know exaclty what the implications of higher order solutions (or a lack thereof) are.

Part of the reason it's so famous is that Fermat wrote it in the margins of another proof and said "this margin is too small to prove it, so i won't prove it."Then he died, so by the time people realized that it wasn't easy to prove, it was too late to ask him. But he claimed it so simply that everybody thought that it must be simple. so they kept trying, but kept getting stuck. 357 years later it was completed (note he only got like half of it IIRC), by someone who "had a childhood fascination with Fermat's Last Theorem" and using a lot of advanced shit (begging the question of how the fuck fermat would've done it). Also there was a $50,000 prize for whoever solved it, so naturally people were interested.

So i dont' know why it was a big deal, but that's a little bit of motivation for solving it.
Yes, anyone could make a statement about an impossible equation, but no one would care unless you were one of the greatest mathematicans of all time and unless you did so in such a carefree manner that you diint' even bother writing a proof

-Fermat was the first person known to have evaluated the integral of general power functions. Using an ingenious trick, he was able to reduce this evaluation to the sum of geometric series.
-He invented a factorization method—Fermat's factorization method
-Fermat studied Pell's equation, perfect numbers, amicable numbers and what would later become Fermat numbers
-Fermat's principle of least time (which he used to derive Snell's law in 1657) was the first variational principle
