Recliner of Rage Edition:
Why didin't focus on relations with the more advanced civilizations? Why was it always the primitives and the super advanced ones?

I don't think there were many civilizations on our level to trade with. And if there were there wouldn't be much to trade for.
Bumping for SG's sake.
Because the advanced cultures they met were complete assholes. You had that one group that wanted to sterlize Earthbound humans, and there was the prominent one that were pretty cool but wanted to remain neutral against the System Lords, and most of the others were either unreliable, isolationist, or just dicks in general.
Even the Asgard, who were probably the friendliest of the advanced civilizations, were somewhat standoffish because they had their own shit to deal with and didn't want to fuck with a bunch of primate humans if they could avoid it.

This. Why did the Tollans suck so much?
because the goauld/wraith had held back so many worlds, and anybody more advanced was focused on ascending

We have reports of Goolds on planet KS7-535.
You mission is to find and eliminate the Goold.

That's a good point though. No doubt most planets traded in naquadah. It's absurd to not show the planets that industrialized it.

>sterlize Earthbound humans
The episode(s) relating to that were cool as fuck. Good solid TV scifi.

Space in SG is depicted as a scary place in general, so species don't spend much time fucking around. Most of the galaxy is enemies enslaving other races.
Compare this to say Star-Trek in which large sections of space have been set up by the united federation of planets as a large scale socialist paradise. This leads to plenty of leisure time, recreation, and plenty of time to fuck around getting to know other species.
Don't care. We're still in control of large swaths of the galaxy.
