The behind the scenes stuff is the most important part. Mike was a writer behind the scene for a lot of the early seasons before he became the onscreen lead.

I know "The Room" is an overused example now, but The Room itself is 12 years old, and isn't it basically the last example of a weird, crazy, inept director pouring out all of his earnest heart and soul to make a bizarre movie? It's just not done anymore, and in the 60's and 70's and '80s there were a LOT of movies like this. I don't know what happened to them.
And of course, the shorts are dead. Those wonderfully campy public domain public service "educational" features. Where did they come from in the first place? Where did they go? It is a mystery.

If you mean the young, inept and deranged filmmakers, then yes, a lot of them do go to YouTube. It's just not the same. Green screens and lapel mics and Adobe After Effects and 4k smartphone cameras ruined everything. As late as the 90s, Kevin Smith could talk about what a fun and unique form of hell editing your own 16mm film stock was, and it's an effect that can't really be replicated.

Digital video really killed the no budget film. Not just because it looked like shit in the early 2000s, but the bar to make a film dropped to nothing. Before you needed access to filmmaking equipment and money for film stock, and I think that set a modicum of talent/connections necessary to make a movie. It was a low bar but it was there. Then cheap DV came out and anyone could buy a camera and make a film, quality bombed out to lower depths than before in addition to DV looking nothing like film at the time. I think these kinds of films just died from that
