But then you have to wonder, why did Palpatine want to kill the younglings? I mean he still needs support from the senate and there is a full recording of him giving orders to kill the Jedi. I mean he wants the senate to believe the Jedi are taking over, so why would he create sympathy in the Jedi's favour? You'd think at that point the senate would realise the Jedi are in fact, not trying to take over.

Probably to ensure that none of them would escape and grow up with great resentment for Palpatine and the Empire, only to become what Luke did later. Or to make sure that none would escape along with a master, and do the same but under the tutelage of a master.
The twist that Anakin was Darth Vader was actually kind of cool. Bigger twist than being Luke's father in my opinion.

The Youngling murder was over the top and edgy. It was basically too much, and the straw that broke the camel's back. Anakin's turn was justified up to that point, but the premeditated murder of children was a line that Vader shouldn't have crossed, at least at that point in his life.
