It doesn't make a lot of sense, but I though that them going thought the black hole was "groundhog day" style, they went through the warp, but it distorted time, and they all eventually went insane, and killed each other, coming out of the "warp" mashed them together into the ship and gave the ship some kind of life force.

Probably, the film kind of treated it as a 'technology can fuck you over' type thriller. Lots of needless excessive gore porn, like that guy who was just cut up and hanged in the infirmary and they don't even focus on it the character at the time just kind of looks at it and walks away. Thought it was pretty funny. At that point they were kind of expecting that sort of thing.
