I watched some Doctor Who for the first time yesterday. The 11th doctor was meeting Winston Churchill and fighting daleks.

Ok. This show is... embarrassing. How can you all like it? I mean I want to like it, the show always looked fun to me, but it's just... manchild-y and cringey. What should I do?
>>
>>62881644
Watch the next ep and just forget Victory of the Daleks..the next one is a two-parter featuring the Weeping Angels, and after that, the season is amazing with the exception of one or two episodes.
>>
>>62881644
You picked a wrong episode to start with. But either way it's a show with very uneven quality which is more fun then sensible or mature. If you don't like it, watch something else.

Starting here and forming an opinion from this episode just proves how much out of depth you are. Your opinion is immature at best. At last watch some of the other Doctor stories, classic and New Who.

I'm sure it's been talked to death here already, but what in the cunting fuck was up with the last episode? It's like they never came up with an ending so the episode just sort of, stopped, even the Doctor remarks "None of this makes sense!"
Love and Monsters-tier bad, fuck.

It confused me most because it seemed like it would be a two-parter, because all the rest had been, and I assumed they were going with that as a kind of theme with all the 'mirrored' titles.

Then the episode ends with the solar system presumably being infected by the weird eye gunk stuff and I assumed next episode would be trying to fix it (although I didn't really see how they could pull it off) but instead... nothing. It just ends and that's that.

It's supposed to be campy sci-fi with comedic elements. Most people watch doctor who because the doctor is amusing or humorous. Yes, absolutely 1 or two fun romp episodes are preferred. I think this series has been a bit too serious, but it hasn't been without laughs. I feel i've yet to see the doctor and clara having the "time of their lives" or their "glory days" i think it was described as being. That being said, I've still enjoyed the series thus far but not as much as series 8.
>>62886103
It seems as if Gatiss is promised by moff one episode a series, came up with a two parter because he thought like you that there was a two part theme to this series, and moff like a firm and loving father said "No, Mark. Just one, you can finish it next year." and went back to fucking with his action figures.

Couldn't agree more. I don't think his stories are as bad as people make them out to be, but he needs to realise that being a fan of horror doesn't automatically make him good at writing it. IMO, Cold War is his most enjoyable horror episode, although the ending was a total cop-out. Robot of Sherwood is his best contribution to date. He should write more stuff like the latter.

It's haunting, "Mr sandman" when he says "Yeeees?" sounds kind of ethereal, as so with the girls. It also kinda sounds a bit distorted I guess due to the recording technology. He knows something is wrong. He leaves thinking, ‘This doesn’t make any sense.’ That’s also a get-out-of-jail card. There are going to be consequences because if Rassmussen succeeds, pressing that button, then it’s going to spread. So maybe there’s a sequel…”

Not that anon, but I actually preferred The Girl Who Died. I just saw it as a campy romp, and I always enjoy those light-hearted sorts of episodes. I just didn't like the arc stuff with Ashildr. It felt really incongruent, next to the inherent silliness of the story.

I'm usually a fan of romp stuff too, like Delta and the Bannermen or the Gunfighters, but Girl Who Died didn't do it for me, was just too silly. It gave off the vibe throughout the entire thing and at the 'galactic Youtube' part it became completely irredeemable. Women Who Lived was just much more well-written, and I'm always a fan of discussions on immortality and the bad sides of it, Ashildr's story was pretty good go at that.

Women Who Lived wasn't THAT good imo but it was solid and of surprising quality considering what came before it.

Expanding on my own post, here's something Mad Larry wrote about a Torchwood episode by Tregenna:

>When Buffy the Vampire Slayer pioneered the fantasy / soap-opera hybrid, it was wise enough to understand that all the fantasy elements have to resonate with the "real" elements: the monsters are hormone-driven manifestations of the characters' own teenage angst, so the fantasy and the soap-opera are ultimately the same thing. Every fantasy-soap since Buffy has completely missed this (fairly essential) point, and given us stories about giant scorpions with "relationship" scenes thrown randomly into the mix, as if giant scorpions aren't interesting enough without the occasional detour into Sex and the City. Here we have a story about an enormously bloated whale-beast that sits around having chunks of fat cut off its body, but which is also about… Gwen having issues with her boyfriend. If I were the actor playing Rhys, then I'd feel offended by the subtext.

I've never seen Buffy, but I definitely agree with the basic point. The Woman Who Lived wanted to be about Ashildr's immortality, but since it's Doctor Who a random alien invasion plot was thrown in, and the two things felt totally disconnected. The episode needed some kind of alien/monster that was thematically linked to Ashildr's situation, and the plot needed to be more about that too. Instead, the character stuff was confined to the dialogue scenes and the fucking alien lion got the rest of the episode. I still thought it was kind of OK, but it could have been much better.

Series 9 is a ratings flop. Fans just don't care about the show anymore it's even worse than hating it at least they were still watching. There's been a 2 million drop between Death in Heaven and The Magician's Apprentice. AI keep on dropping lower and lower week on week, getting to 76. The last score under 80 was Love and Monsters. The show is dead.

Reminder Series 9 is aiming at "mature" audiences with dark and edgy themes and utterly failing (ie ratings flop), it's even not done properly and it's not Doctor Who anymore and it's flopping for these reasons:

>ratings have dropped 2 millions between Death in Heaven and The Magician's Apprentice
>AI have been getting lower and lower with each episode reaching an all time low of 78, no episode fell under 80 since Love and Monsters (76)
>dark unlikeable Doctor
>Clara more obnoxious than ever
>it's the same as series 8 and they've been saying it since the very first trailer "Same old, same old just the Doctor and Clara Oswald in the TARDIS", there's literally nothing new
>cringey jokes
>dick jokes
>no romp episode or completely fun episide
>Davros is dying
>young festive viking girl dies of a heart failure
>immortal woman lives through too many things and becomes crazy
>immigrants kidnapping, tensions all around
>speeches about the atrocity of war
>"is it me or you who's dying?"
>"Clara Oswald. Why did I make of you?"
>"I have duty of care. Every time we do something like this, I keep thinking, what if something happens to you?"
>"Clara will die. You'll kill her. She'll blow away in smoke"
>"You must have thought I was dead for a while?"

Sleep No More had an AI of 78. Love and Monsters got a 76.

Not true. The AI for Series 9 goes
>The Magician’s Apprentice 84
>The Witch’s Familiar 83
>Under the Lake 84
>Before the Flood 83
>The Girl Who Died 82
>The Woman Who Lived 81
>The Zygon Invasion 82
>The Zygon Inversion 84
>Sleep No More 78

>>62889758
No, she was featured on magazine covers, articles, in the clip for Children in Need and all the other promo clips. It was clear she was going to be in it before it aired.

>>62889757
That's your theory, but it's not supported by anything. Alternatively it got an AI of 82 so people were happy with the episode that ended with Clara getting back in the TARDIS.

Personally I think ratings dropped because of the ill judged time slot and the poor pre series promotion. Next year could show if this was the case if they make a change. The show is far from a ratings flop however, it's still one of the most watched shows on television. But there's obviously been a decrease from last year for some reason.
>>
>>62889982
Fun, at least. Cause at least Ten and Rose had fun having adventures. 12 and Clara just don't seem to like it. They're in a relationship that's just like an old habit you can't quit like smoking or drugs or candies or bubble gums.

Not true, they not getting lower with each episode, SNM was just a low point. Inversion was as high as TMA.

>cringey jokes
>dick jokes
Series two: dick joke, blowjob joke, idiocy abound.

>Davros is dying
When doesn't he?

Any Doctor waffle on about it, especially Ten

Repost. Spoiler tag went wrong.
Capaldi's speech at the end of Face the Raven:
"I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to give you a head start. I'm going to wait, and I'm going to let you run. But remember this: no matter how far you choose to go, you will always be looking over your shoulder, from now until the day you are dust. No matter where you end up, no matter which corner of the universe you choose to seek refuge, I will always be there, like the breath on the back of your neck. The shadow in your nightmares, one step behind yet two steps ahead. And if the terror does not claim you, know only this - I will. I will end you, and everything you have ever loved. Now on your marks."

>Wow, one scene in 9 episodes which really was just pretending so the Mire would fall in their trap.
Who says they were pretending? They were having fun, and had just as much fun later when they were showing the Mire how they'd recorded them running from nothing.

They were also enjoying themselves when they escaped at the end of TWF, during Under the Lake when they kept smiling and joking throughout and getting excited over the 'ghosts', and every other time when it was appropriate and lives weren't in danger. So, like every other series pretty much. This 'series 9 is grim dark' meme is ridiculously unfounded, it's no darker than most of the other nu Who series have been. It's also less dark than Series 3 or 8 were.
>>
>>62890274
>They weren't having fun. Clara wanted a proper adventure but the TARDIS decided against that.

" Come on! we're on a roll! Monsters, things blowing up.
Oh, hey, can we go back to that place
where the people with the long necks have been celebrating New Year
for two centuries? I left my sunglasses there. And most of my dignity. "

If alien parties and adventures is not "fun" i don't know what is. Probably wanting to see death of your father or hanging out in London all the time craving over Doctor's cock.
>>
>>62890274
>Well yes but I didn't even mention it so stop comparing them.

No one's comparing anything. People are telling you that Series 2 is also " aiming at "mature" audiences with dark and edgy themes and utterly failing"
>>
I thought Series 9 was meant to be the "glory days" for The Doctor and Clara?
>Episode 1/2, Clara is seemingly killed then abused by Missy by being locked in a dalek.
>Episode 3/4, The Doctor and Clara are separated for most of the story
>Episode 5, The Doctor basically ignores Clara and focuses on Ashildr
>Episode 6, Clara's not even in it
>Episode 7, Real Clara's not even in it
>Episode 8, le Bonnie
>Episode 9, The only time they have a proper adventure. Worst episode of the series.
>Episode 10, dead.

Them glory days sure are fun!
>>
>>62890349
SHOW DON'T TELL. I can say I've been to the most fun planet of the universe with rollercoaster galaxy and a zoo of the most rare species of the universe but that wouldn't be fun.

>>62890309
Okay I admit you're right but
>less dark than Series 3 or 8

What? I mean what? Series 9 has 12 pointing a gun at a child, foreshadowing of Clara's death all around, the Doctor being grave for no reason, dark and mature themes (Zygons/Muslims) and more. Series 3 and 8 had none (arguably Kill the Moon but the subtext isn't as blatant as Zygons).

>>62890363
Oh. Well that was because at that time the show was still aimed at kids. Now the audience is more split.

>>
>>62890468
>Series 3 and 8 had none (arguably Kill the Moon but the subtext isn't as blatant as Zygons).

Series 3 had the Doctor ignoring his new companion a lot in favor of moping about his previous one, the Face of Boe dying, the Doctor becoming a human and that human version essentially dying, the Master taking over the Earth and capturing the Doctor for a year of horrific atrocities and torturing the Doctor and Martha's family and ended with Martha leaving him for not treating her right and to take care of her traumatised family.

Series 8 had people from every episode dying and showing up in 'heaven' greeted by a psycho Mary Poppins, the Doctor and Clara struggling to stay friends after he regenerated, and Clara's bf dying in a car crash and then being grimly resurrected as a cyberman only to blow himself up and order a lot of other people who'd been resurrected as cybermen to explode with him.

For the record I liked both these series but they certainly had a lot of darker themes and were arguably more depressing than series 9 if you're sensitive to that sort of thing.

Maisiefest was OK but tedious.
