TV programs typically degrade during the third season or about 50 episodes. It's usually time to call it quits after the fifth season or 100 episodes. Anything beyond that and it's pretty obvious that they're dragging things out and the show is just corpse of its former self just waiting for everybody with the power to put it out of its misery.
For me it was one of the major characters left the show. I forget who it was (Jackie or Kelso or Eric), but I just stopped caring after that.
