Where do you folks go to get western movies in 1080p? I use AvistaZ for Asian stuff and I don't really wanna use public torrents for western movies.

I've used w-bb in the past, but it's getting increasingly difficult to find good DDL links.

>>
>>62872974
the worst part of that list isn't that she's including horror films written by women, but that she is making claims in the description that film is misogynist and that horror films in particular are the most "patriarchal" or some bullshit.

women were integral to the foundations of film as an art form, and women have always used horror films especially as a creative output since its an incredibly accessible genre. Horror is like the least-sexist film genre, and this entire list is flawed from its very thesis. I think it shows a complete misunderstanding of film and film history in general, and should honestly just be ignored as the fluff it is.

So funny how modern social justice culture thrives on finding reasons to feel like a victim rather than to celebrate histories that prove that culture isn't inherently discriminatory.

this
my film class keeps finding ways to point out even the most retarded ways movies are white-hetero-male problamatic

like she had the balls to say that "The River" took a view of the indians as the "exotic other" and is problematic. Like how could Renoirs respect for the culture fly right over her head???
>>
yeah man, film studies is so hard to study now with these new "problematic" lenses to see everything through
>>
>>62876633
it's total bullshit. Like we spend hours discussing auteur theory only to throw it out the window when a film displays only one aspect of a gender or has minorities in only minor role. like, why cant a director appreciate motherhood specifically? why is it a problem that he doesnt have strong female characters with no children?

or why is it wrong to play off of stereo types for farcical effects or to subvert them in subversive ways?

like holy shit, its so infuriating

not to mention how they measure the importance of characters by screen time and leading roles. like if you have a movie with a white male protagonist and the movie spends the entire time ripping him to shreds its still reinforcing the cultural oppressive white male norms

i mean holy shit its just so dumb
>>
>>62876731

As of this morning, I have seen Kill Bill (both parts, I consider them to be one film at heart) 19 times.

Seem excessive? Not to me. Kill Bill is the film that made me realize entertainment and art weren't mutually exclusive. Kill Bill is the film that made filmmaking look fun and beautiful. Kill Bill is the only film that can make me cry tears of sadness, joy, and just damn amazement in the span of a few hours. Kill Bill is the reason I'm currently studying to be a screenwriter.

This is unquestionably my favorite and most personal film of all time, and it may never be topped. Here's to a time 20 real soon.

In some ways yes, Eastwood is politically right-leaning, but I don't know, he doesn't always seem to give a damn about politics and sometimes (like in American Sniper) he actively criticizes the politics of the right. But this isn't to say he's some crypto-liberal or something.

>watching tv dramas
I watched the HBO series Luck because of Michael Mann's involvement and I regret it. The Mann-directed pilot is GOAT and ranks among the best things Mann has ever done. It is all unsaid and suggested things which makes it more affecting and mysterious, but then the rest of the series fleshes out and makes explicit everything alluded to and robs the pilot of it's hinted-at, snapshot quality. The pilot is an artistic achievement, but the rest of the series is just standard cable drama. Live your own life instead of getting involved in fictional ones on tv.
>>
>>62897733
mann oversaw the production of the entire show and the quality is consistently excellent from beginning to end. it's unlike anything except other milch. you're a faggot.
>>
>>62897733
>>62897799
The first anon is right for shitting on television at large but both of you are wrong if only for defending Mann. Luck is good? Seriously?

Mann is a middlebrow poshlost non-entity, and the fact that he has amassed a cult of personality amongst vulgar auteurists with no writing skill is no accident. He has no aesthetic sense and what little auteurial stamp he has on his oeuvre is bland and cringeworthy.

>haha there was a Derrida book on the shelf at the beginning of Blackhat, so deep and postmodern!

He's a glorified action movie star. He is what Michael Bay would be if Michael Bay thought he was making anything other than visceral pop action films.
>>
>>62897733
I haven't seen Luck and I don't see what this has to do with Deadwood other than Milch. There is literally nothing wrong with watching series like The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire, Dekalog, Heimat, Scenes from a Marriage or Berlin Alexanderplatz. I consider them all great artistic achievements.

I'm not even salty I just don't get what people see in Mann. He's putrid to me. Collateral was good but in the end it's just a fairly generic thriller and I suspect the good aspects of it had very little to do with Mann. The highlight of Mann's career is "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner," but not only is Heat overracted middlebrow kitsch, Mann didn't even write that line.

Only Michael Mann could fuck up a film where DeNiro and Pacino have top billing for the first time.
>>
>>62898371
collateral isn't even that different to miami vice and heat though

You're right in the sense that it's shot the with the same lukewarm, clinical, bloodless manner but the dialogue and the story are miles above both Heat or Miami Vice, and ultimately all of these films fall under "two well-known actors walking around being angsty, reciting terribly corny Mann dialogue and channeling Spanish soap opera performance".

You can't even give credit to Mann for being clinical or bloodless because he's not clinical or bloodless in the same way Kubrick made being clinical or bloodless into a meme. Kubrick used his coldness to build a mythology and to support his artistic vision and it just works in his case. With Mann it doesn't; he's just fucking bland and I'm not on board with whatever aesthetic he's trying to put across. Blackhat is the best example of this, it was cinematic oatmeal and has almost no redeeming qualities.

I've only seen a few Mann films but I'm inclined to agree with >>62898616. A lot of the praise for him seems to be desperately reaching. If you like him for making "stylish" crime thrillers than great, but don't act like its high art because he used bad digital cameras and makes lights look pretty.

If you think Collateral is Mann's best film and praise its writing then we aren't on the same page about what makes Mann great. I'd recommend listening to this podcast on Mann. Keith Uhlich gets pretty much everything that Mann is about, correctly recognizing Collateral as one of Mann's weakest films and the theatrical cut of Miami Vice as his greatest.

If you can't see the difference in quality, powerful aesthetic form and spatial articulation in Mann's direction of the pilot when compared to say, Allen Coulter and Mimi Leder's episodes, then I guess there's no way we can talk. If you are just watching it for Milch's dialogue, even the pilot (the only episode Milch is credited as a writer on) is better than the other episodes in this regard. Or maybe Mann's direction makes the dialogue better/more memorable?

Wanted to add Fred Camper's words on Collateral:

>Jonathan is of course right about the film's sense of time and place, but this isn't what I really liked about it. Nor did I particularly like the genre film button-pushing: will the killer get to kill his victims, will he get away annoyed me as methods of holding my attention. What I liked most was the way certain formal elements functioned (no surprise here for people who know me; I hope I'm not starting to sound like a self-parody), particularly the moment-to-moment
sense of imbalance Mann creates in composition and editing. In this sense, the film reminded me of "Ali," which I also liked a lot, though its tone is very different. Unbalanced compositions that place characters on the edge of the frame are answered by differently unbalanced ones that follow, and the whole film seems to be teetering on more than one edge. This is entirely appropriate to its story, or course, and likely enhances one's experience of it, but I think it also goes beyond that, in that it uses its particular combination of composition and rhythms to create a way of seeing.

>This connects with the other element I liked, the "dreamy" one, made most explicit in the extremely high helicopter views following moving cars, but also in the film's lighting, in the choice of bizarre backgrounds, in one's sense of the characters as "floating" in their traps for much of the film. It's not a Blake Edwards movie, though, because Mann's compositions and compositional imbalances are hard-edged and precise, and he often uses editing beautifully to enhance one's feeling of displacement.

Nope, I analyzed the situation and looked at all the evidence and it seems right enough.

Besides, I'm not beta at all and I doubt she'd care anyway. So stop being a bully; its hurtful and does not promote good values or conversation.
>>
>>62899952
>I see very few new Hollywood movies, but unlike most of the ones I do see this seems to me to be real cinema, clearly articulated visually in space and time, rather than images merely illustrating a script, the "picture-book" mode of many narrative films I dislike. Whether Mann is greater than I think he is so far (and I'm missing some key ones), or not as great, I'm not sure, but it's nice to see a film that actually "works" on my terms, as a film.

Why can't Mann autists think for themselves?
>>
>>62899748
Thanks for the link, I'll give it a listen and report back with my thoughts.

I'm interested in hearing a cogent defense of Mann because I've seen his films and am not impressed, and every written defense I've read of him contains the same flowery purple prose nonsense that is characteristic of the vulgar auteurism movement; using long expanses of affected text to say absolutely nothing, which I think is a good summation of Mann's filmography.
