And that's what makes Daria great, because she is indeed something else, not some dumb grimdark joke like most goths are. She just can't handle this horribly vapid world, and even choses not to.
I can't recall the exact episode, but there's one speech her mom gave her that said "we tell you over and over again how wonderful you are, and you just don't get it". That was really interesting because it's so easy when you have shit parents to blame them for all your crap, but when they do try to make things right, you're left with nothing to blame but yourself.
Despite the comical stereotypes, each and every character had some nice depth behind.

Burch simultaneously ruined Daria and managed to completely miss the overarching point of the show - great.
Daria and Jane were smart. yes. They were a lot smarter than their peers, yes. But Daria's emotional distance was ultimately a form of defense she put up in order to save herself from potential rejection in a world where she clearly wasn't deemed acceptable. Jane learns to get over this adolescent phase earlier than Daira and conflict emerges because of this. Daria too eventually learns to interact with people in a way that doesn't involve snide humor and a glib outlook, and ultimately matures whilst still retaining her intelligence and principles.
The fact that her character arc went over Burch's head so completely - and that he only highlights her most obvious traits - shows that he both sucks at analysis and is probably still stuck in that adolescent phase himself. Most SJWs are.

Yes, he's awful. His only defining traits are that he's conventionally attractive, somewhat intelligent and that he comes from a very wealthy family. Daria reneged on her principles by going out with him, which is sort of the point.
