And the irony of it is, it isnt even all that popular. it is watched by alot of people but it is still considered an "underground" show.

strong first season, second season was a bit weaker and relied more heavily on gags.
last episode of s2 was too plot heavy.
overall it's not as bad as people would have you believe.
but I'm not hopeful that season 3 and beyond will be any good, I think they had a flash in the pan with the first season.
it hits its stride almost immediately and quickly goes out of step.

Artstyle is as creative as a show from Seth McFarlane not to mention it doesn't even settle for a definitive style, rather it seems to be an amalgam of regular show, adventure time and the simpsons.
Relies too much on cliches and pop culture references, tools overused on adult animation, oddly enough, early adultswim cartoons managed better writing despite using old models.
Like Community, show never really lived to its full potential before its decline.
It's not bad, caught some episodes before ATHF, but it's really just as bland as Family Guy.

I believe the merging of artstyle helps the theme of the show overall, at times it looks dingy and crummy and other bright and vibrate. I have never noticed if they do this but i kinda hope they use the differing artstyle to set a mood for scenes.
It doesnt rely on pop culture as much as many other shows including simpsons, southpark etc. The show isnt made for a single audience, it is something you have to accept and there is some episodes you wont like and that will be for specific groups or none at all, some were actually confirmed that they were made strictly with roiland in mind.

Actually alot of these adult cartoons have messages in them, even if they are extremely brief in between jokes or mixed in with the jokes so much they are barely seen, doesnt stop the fact that they are there.
Bland is so vague and the term is subjective so its hard to even determine but if you have no sense of humor or really jaded i wouldnt be surprised if you think alot of these shows are bland...also you might just have a completely different sense of humor that doesnt even react to the shows like this.
ATHF, Sealab, squidbillies are a much different comedic style than rick and morty and robot chicken for example.

Simple art/animation style that they actually use to create beautiful and creative imagery.
Great story universe featuring super science/outer space/alternate dimensions that allows them to do whatever they want and have episodes spiral into complete cartoon insanity while also maintaining an internal logic.
Unapologetic humor that can be genuinely shocking and fucked up (dying character screaming "Oh God I see demons!" etc).
One of the best adult cartoons I've ever seen honestly.

Mostly it's their color theory and how they design objects, and how they use the simplified character designs to create funny motion. Any time they're in an alien environment or something bizarre is happening especially, but even the normal earth environments are nice. It's hard to describe without sounding like too much of an artfag, but it's definately not dull or boring to look at like a Seth Macfarlane show.
