The battle of Naboo was about trade embargos, but was REALLY about Palpatine playing both sides to manipulate Padme into getting him elected as the new chancellor. The Clone Wars were the same deal, Palpatine got Dooku to lead the CIS Scum so that the senate would be willing to give him more and more power, and so the Jedi Council would start using the clones that were secretly under his control, so that eventually he could kill the Jedi and take complete control of the galaxy.
The senate knew that Dooku was with the separatists, but he thought they were just pissed about taxes or some shit like that, they didn't know he was working for (Or that he was) a Sith.
I decided to re-watch the movies in chronological order, and while I obviously like the prequels less than I did when I was a kid (Oh god, I used to like Jar Jar), I am gaining a new appreciation for the story since I'm paying more attention to the dialogue and better understand the politics.

The idea that force lightning is more of a fuck-you power meant for causing maximum pain rather than killing or damaging outright makes more sense to me, given how Palps used it in RotJ. Dooku using it is kind of annoying because of the context; he was trying to come off as a reasonable dissident, not full-blown evil murder guy. Also it established the technique was really not that special or hard to learn at all.
And once again Lucas left it to the EU writers to explain Vader couldn't do it because robo-hands, or not Sith enough, or both.
