I think the problem with Ferrell is people who are ignorant towards the on screen comedic process don't "get it." I agree he often hams it the fuck up for mainstream audiences, but the guy has a track record of professors and coaches predicted he was destined for greatness. He single handedly carried SNL on his back for years, has very few flops. He's wittier and more original than all other comedic actors, plus he's a good actor and he's fucking goofy looking. What is the problem? Sure he's not doug stanhope or norm macdonald or whoever but they can't carry movies worth shit.
He was good in the Lego Movie and good in Elf. Most normies adore him because of Elf.

This is basically what it comes down to and I think people don't know or forget. He pioneered so many styles of humor that are now mainstream because of him. He was literally the main driving force for progress in comedy throughout the 00s. Hating Ferrell is almost akin to hating a movie for tropes that it invented.
