It was about ordinary people dealing with extraordinary circumstances, and it was also a love letter to midwestern values that yes did have characters talking in ostensibly silly accents from an outsider's perspective and doing dumb things but it also more importantly demonstrated that thinking, talking, and acting like a stereotypical yokel doesn't preclude a person from being smart or capable of dealing with difficult situations. The tv show has none of this nuance, it is ridiculously unrealistic and there are no dimensions to any of it's characters.
