I fucking loved the aesthetic on this. Bleak, sort of neo-noirish, yet there's all these interesting little flecks of color and strange surreal things to break shit up. It's really nice.

Any other movies like this? If not in subject matter, anything like this aesthetic?

inb4 Enemy

The style is completely different, not really similar. Brazil maybe?

Read the book
The movie is obviously only very loosely based on it, but it's fucking great
>>
Mood Indigo by Michel Gondry is less bleak, but still strange and surreal. watch the shorter version. ive only heard god awful things about the long, original version.

also, watch Submarine. same director. again, not as bleak, but same sensibilities in film making.

It was basically a mix of Eraserhead and Brazil and Ayoade's own Wes Anderson type style that apes old directors like Malle and Ashby.
Fuck you mods.

I posted in a porn thread (that is still up btw, with my post being the only one that got deleted), so they slapped an off topic ban on me along with deleting all the posts associated with my IP.

That scene is equal parts funny and deeply disturbing, I love it.

And sorry about that, guy.

This. It's very in the same vain of Brazil. Or possibly a Tati film but darker.
Ayoade seems to be a guy who makes films that wear the influences heavy on their sleeves.

Also Enemy is just as good.

That scene legitimately gave me a fright the first time. The hop off the edge was so sudden and quiet, without any jump scare music.
Also, are there any other movies that employ this kind of spotlight harsh stage-like lighting? I can only think of Querelle, but that has warmer, softer light.

I liked Enemy more, but watching a youtube video explaining all the symbolism definitely added to my appreciation.

The Double was also good though, I hate Jesse Eisenberg but though he did pretty good in this, especially as the double. Plus it had my waifu.

Noir doesn't look like it's on a stage though. The shadows are longer and exaggerated, and the whole scene is illuminated or in shadows, not just the actor.

It's pretty weak for Dostoevsky and Gogol does similar things much better

Enemy was more artsy. And it's just so mesmerizing.
Also it's obvs you watched yms.

The Double is great. I look forward to more Ayoade films as he pays homage to new wave French movies.
