It's pretty much universally agreed that Dexter goes to shit after S4. A lot of people will even argue that it goes to shit after S2, and that the only reason S4 is well regarded is because it has a great villan.
S5 is just dull. It undoes anything interesting set up by the earlier seasons and is boring. Even though so much stuff has happened that should alter the show the writers refuse to deviate from the formula
S6 is far stupider, but it's entertaining in how over the top and retarded it is, I say it's the best of the post S4 seasons because of how much of a self parody it is.
S7 is much like S5, boring, aimless and doesn't do anything interesting with what S6 has set up and just goes back to the status quo, even though the show should be winding down at this point.
S8 is just fucking horrible. People had low expectations, but it managed to be even worse. Throughout the entire season it manages to be as boring as S5 and as stupid as S6, but with absolutely no entertainment value. It feels like a chore to watch and ends in one of the most hated finales of all time. Nothing you read about season 8 is hyperbole, it really is fucking bad

Dexter literally never changes. The only thing that changes with Dexter is the audience grows older and realizes it was a terrible show while trying to rationalize their previous viewership. It's a terrible, aimless, campy, soap opera tier show from the very first episode. The first fucking line of dialogue is a cliche. There's romantic interest that leads nowhere. Storylines that meet abrupt dead ends.

They essentially tried to reboot it as if it were s1 of a new show but with the same name recognition and one or two main cast members carrying over.
There is a set of four fresh faced interns/med students to take the place of what jd/elliot/turk/carla were in early seasons. One of them denise, from s8, one is a female j.d. who does the narration, one is a spoiled rich dudebro and one is a very tolerable 30-year old who washed out of med school the first time around and is trying again.
JD is back for the first three episodes or so for continuity, Turk, Cox and Kelso remain main cast, carla never comes back, janitor and elliot have ultra brief cameos.
Pretty sucky. I mean, they made a new show and it didn't work out just like most new shows don't work out. People's expectations causes them to interpret this as some sort of epic failure though since it was scrubs in name.
