The Sith and the usage of 'Darth' as a moniker for them was not used in the Original Trilogy
When Obi-Wan duels Vader in A New Hope, he retorts 'only a master of evil, Darth'. Though 'Darth' in the prequels functions as sort of a knighthood term for Sith, ala 'sir', it wouldn't make sense in that context. It more than likely (in universe) was something that Anakin just used to make himself sound cool and differentiate himself from his own life prior to the prequels.
Its one of the many examples of Lucas not understanding his own material when he wrote the prequels.
He not a sith lord, he's basically a dark jedi. He doesn't have sith powers, just uses jedi powers but on the dark side.
