Lindelof added two more years so as to reduce the threat of having to expand upon the premise at all. The goal was to build a premise he would never have to touch so he could just focus on character drama. The result has been completely contrived and total bullshit.
Furthermore, instead of following season 1's example and having shit slowly progress over a year, lindelof is having everyone just go completely fucking mad in the space of months, despite being relatively stable, if a little nuts, for FOUR YEARS.
