They did. Basically it was only really enjoyed by niggers and fags, and was quickly taking over rock music ever since this one NY radio rock station switched to disco and became huge, paired with the release of Saturday Night Fever. Imagine if the worst rave music decided to cram itself deep into the mainstream, exclusively overshadowing anything the kids are listening to these days. That's kind of what was happening, and the rock fans weren't about to fucking have that.
