>inb4: someone says Blackhat
Collateral is as brilliantly made as anything else but it's really dragged down by its shitty script. (His first film he didn't write btw.)
The try-hard philosophical dialogue about human nature, the third act's hard shift into being a Terminator sequel, and how nonsensically its transitioned in to. It's a very generic pre-packaged Mann-imitation script that apparently Mann himself thought was passable enough to make.
>Best Film
Blackhat

Collateral.

based Cruise though

When did the contrarians start touting Blackmeme?
>>62763637
It's only contrarian to like Blackhat from a video game r/movies "film buff" perspective.
I say Manhunter is not only his best film, but also the best Thomas Harris adaptation. Fight me.
Great soundtrack

Blackhat is literally reddit the movie complete with the mahvel meme actor that all the tumblrinas cream over.
>>62763637
When they heard that they could justify bad taste under the banner of Vulgar Auteurism
>>62763707
Well obviously. I seriously believe that the world would be a better place if everybody who preferred Silence Of The Lambs to Manhunter took a bullet to the head and everyone who preferred Red Dragon to Manhunter took a bullet to each kneecap and then to the head.
Last time I watched SOTL I was so furious throughout that it was considered a better film by many than Manhunter. I stood up and went into a blind rage, punching my concrete wall until my hand was swollen and bloodied. Picturing the cheeto stained face of every fedora wearing IMDB sensibility retard who could think that this populist trash was superior to Mann's masterpiece. I literally tremble with rage just at the very sight of the Hopkins Lector.
Collateral, but it's very close
>>62763735
It was blunt force arthouse trauma that used a meme actor to lure in the plebs so they could be exposed to true cinema. Blackhat is a bullet fired directly into the heart of Reddit. A chemical weapon left in Reddit HQ.
>>62763798
Manhunter looks gorgeous. Early 80s Mann is best Mann imo.
>>62763321
Collateral is literally the modern film equivalent The Great Gatsby as a work of art.
Heat is a good movie though.
pic related is my favorite however.
There will be ever a blu ray release of The Keep?
Also they are making a documentary of the film.

Gotta be Heat or Collateral. I think Heat beats it out by a bit though.
>>62763707
I'd allow it. It also kept Lecter firmly in the background where he belongs, prior to the oh so edgy "let's make him a main character and let everything revolve around him" horseshit.
Blackhat was a solid film despite being critically panned.
Best film: Heat
Best movie: Manhunter
Best flick: Collateral
>>62763985
Tbh it doesn't surprise me that someone dumb enough to watch Fargo wouldn't be able to appreciate Blackhat. Heat is the artistic infant leagues next to Blackhat. It's fucking movie. Blackhat is undeniably a film.
>>62763937
Heat is a good cops n' robbers movie
Collateral is a film that works on so many levels that it is silly.
>Fitzgerald-esque story about violence and the American dream, or stand alone tie-in to the Fast and Furious series?
>>62763398
This is the correct answer.
>>62764031
>>62764031
I rather liked Blackhat but you should still have your hands chopped off
>>62763798
Hopkins' Lecter was an over-acted pile of shit.
Miami Vice
>>62763735
It's far too abstract to be liked by reddit "cinephiles." You have no idea what is meant by referring to something as "reddit."
>>62764199
This post is reddit.
step aside, kucks
>>62764224
It's literally reddit to not ADORE Blackhat.
>>62763321
>michael mann
is that the guy who directed collateral?
>>62764284
This post literally made me convulse with rage. If you haven't experienced Mann's entire filmography you have no business being on this board.
I feel like I'm the only one who likes Public Enemies. I mean it's not his best movie, but I don't think it gets enough credit.
Heat
Best film: Blackhat
Best movie: Heat
Best flick: Last of the Mohicans
>>62764248
> we will never see Miami Vice as it was originally written
> there will never be a spectacular third act raid on Montoya's mansion, featuring never-before-seen levels of operating
>>62764338
I enjoyed it. I think most complaints boil down to not liking Depp's character, which, if you look at the script, was pretty clearly intentional. He's a bank robber, if he was smart/likable enough to do anything else, he would have done it.
>>62764044
>F&F series
>not The Transporter
>>62763398
correct
>>62764044
> movie literally falls apart in the last 20 minutes
One of his worst, desu
>>62763321
None he is a hack who is all style over substance and fuck anyone with bbc for liking his films
>>62764875
>no substance
>style over substance
flaming redditcluck spotted
>>62764875
You should to try harder next time.
>>62764923
Mann is a fag who cares only about Synth scores and overdramatization. He appeals to only autists and keks because of it. "Hurr I cannot understand nuanced emotions I need people yelling and overacting" He is literally anime tier in that regard.
>>62764991
He is the only director doing heist films, and heist films are objectively the best genre so he wins by default
>>62764991
>can't see anything but the score and takes 2 Al Pacino outbursts to be all actors in all Mann films
lmao'ing @ you're film "critique" 2bh f.am
>>62763321
They're all masterpieces, except for the TV movies andCollateral. I will never understand the love for that film; there are great parts sure, but come on, it is clearly the most inferior. It's so scattershot, it got no focus, and nothing consistently compelling about it. But maybe that's just me (this is a perfectly reasonable explanation).
Side note: Very excited to see Thief and Manhunter on 35mm soon.
>>62764474
Fucking Foxx
>>62764875
>if there's style, th-there must be no substance!

Where ?
>>62766166
New Beverly Cinema in LA
http://www.thenewbev.com/dfsource/2015/8/15/november-20-21-thief-manhunter
They're programming usually isn't that great, but they're killing it in November
>>62763509
shit, he did manhunter?
how did i not know that
>>62766328
Yeah I found it myself by googling. I'm a few thousand miles away. Maybe a theater out here will pick up some Mann films soon
>>62763970
this, thomas harris let the outside world influence the writing. A lot of parallels between him and another hack who gets talked about here
>>62763321
Can we take this opportunity to talk about how underrated Miami Vice is? Only the theatrical cut, though. "Director's Cut" made it complete shit.
>>62763512
did he finally feed his hungry dogs?
This was so good:

One of my favourite endings, simply perfect.
>>62763798
that picture
>triggered
me.
I love Hopkins, I like Silence of the Lambs, but Manhunter is great and this Lecter is far superior.
>>62763970
>>62766398
I can't believe how bad Hannibal is. Film and Book. Straight up fanfic territory. He's the male Stephanie Mayer.
I don't know which ending was worse, book or film, but when Hopkins kissed Moore it felt wrong.
>>62766407
Yes. I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching it.
>the speedboat/airplane/car chase shots
>that music
>those nightclub scenes
>that Farrell/Li Gong chemistry
>the leadup to meeting Jesus
Comfy. As. Fuck.
>>62766730
Heat has my favorite movie ending
>>62764474
Was there going to be a raid on Montoya's mansion? I thought it was going to be a firefight in an abandoned shopping mall.
>>62763398
This and The Insider just seems like his most realized films.
>>62763321
None of Mann's films shot solely on digital, meaning after Collateral since the nightclub scenes, including the best shootout in the movie, were shot on 35mm, come close to his earlier work.
Miami Vice has a good look, but Public Enemies has aged terribly and still looks like shit after all these years. Blackhat was okay, I guess, but Mann could do something better.
>>62763340
>Any other answer is wrong. For you.
>>62766730
this, too many feels, the music and the emotional bond tying those character make it an amazing ending.
also blackhat was pretty cool, it felt like he didnt tried his hardest, but the directing was once again gorgeous and all the character had depth and reason to act the way they did. which is something actual director dont seem to give a shit in a long time. and visually stunning yeah and full of idea.
>>62764338
I'm going to rewatch it today. I think it's a technically wonderful film. The harsh digital and natural lighting gives it such a unique, almost documentary feel which isn't really seen in period pieces.
>>62770344
Miami Vice and Public Enemies are Mann's two best films, IMO.
>>62763690
>>62763837
Fuck off Korinefag, Jesus Christ
>>62763577
You're just the worst kind of person.
He's about to have a Q&A moderated by kris Tapley for those who reside in L.A.
The Insider btw
>>62770655
Actually his best film is Collateral.
>>62763539
Some of the rare cases of a director saving a horrid or subpar script. Should have been rewritten completely, Beattie can't write for shir
>>62763363
>>62763402
>>62770728
Only 2 correct choices.
>>62766730
the music is great
>>62763321
>Best film
Collateral
>Personal favourite
Thief
>Overrated as fuck
Heat
Collateral is the only decent movie he made after switching to digital camers
My favorite is either Heat or Thief
>>62764248
Fugg yeah. I like the way some reviewer put it:
>Crockett is the most mature of Mann's protags. He doesn't ruin his world because of his code or his anger, like Neil and Frank, but out of love for Isabella.
>>62764474
I'm still happy with the shootout we got. There is a very specific moment where the movie turns from good to great and it is this line:
>NO! I do not want that MOTHERFUCKER anywhere near me!
