This is wrong. Both of them worked together on the cinematography and it's Lubezki's style that has changed after working with Malick. Malick's films still have their own aesthetic, which isn't seen that much in Lubezki's other recent films.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Glass

He gets attacked by the bear while hunting ahead of the main party of trappers (~100 people), paired with another hunter. The other hunter draws away the sow during the attack and shoots one of her cubs while it chases him across a river, and then the rest of the party shows up (led by that red-headed actor, Domhall Gleeson) after hearing the commotion and they all shoot the sow.
Glass was valued for his hunting skills so they ask Fitzgerald (Hardy) and another, teen-aged trapper named Bridger to watch after him until the party can return to the spot (they probably expected him to die very soon). Fitzgerald and Bridger book it and leave Glass for dead as soon as they hear evidence of an incoming Indian attack.

There are no records of Glass really having a native american son, although he did really have a Pawnee Indian wife (because they forced him to live with them for several years). He could have had a half-native son and kept it hidden from the history books, though. It's not that far fetched, considering they considered Indians to be animals back then.

it's being filmed on this new 65mm-sensor digital camera

What is the smallest comparable (70mm) film camera anyway? What is the smallest film camera that can accurately resolve 6k of detail? I think they'd need to use a set and dollies and tracks for every shot (as well as dubbing-over all the audio if the camera is too loud like IMAX ones are)

Smaller digital cameras allow for directors to change their shots on the fly and do way more takes in much less time, all of which are exceptionally useful when shooting in remote/cold locations like they did for The Revenant

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with digital, but I think the idea that people actually complain about a camera being to heavy, thus not using it, is shameful. No tool in any job is going to make up for quality training, and everyone should just accept that. If you are unwilling to put in the training because something can compensate for you, you're a slob. The smallest 65mm film camera I've heard of is about twenty pounds.

I didn't say I wanted 48fps all the way through, chill. Just 48fps->24fps motion smoothing over the background when doing quick camera panning like that, and over characters that are moving too fast to follow clearly with normal 24fps

There are already techniques for filming in a high frame rate and then selectively reducing to 24fps. The movie would still look like a 24fps film overall, it just would not have that judder-y shit effect

Not him, but the new Arri has a 65mm sensor, but only outputs to 6K resolution.

35mm film can match 6-8k resolution.

There is no digital camera on the market that can match 70mm film.

Film lovers claim it can match 6-8k. That doesn't mean jack. Just cause it can scanned at higher resolutions doesn't mean it is that resolution because the grain will never allow a super crisp image. It will always have a certain softness just that it will look more defined
>>
>>62763582
However I will stand by the fact that IMAX film is currently the GOAT format in terms of resolution and dynamic range. It's unmatched but it also is loud and cumbersome. I'm not going to question Chivo though because you need a digital camera to shoot in limited lighting
>>
>>62763582

You can't 100% quantify it, because they're two different things.

But even RED give a vague estimation of around 6K for 35mm film.

Guys like Wally Pfister claim up to 8K.

A slow 70mm stock is going to have less grain than the noise displayed by digital cinema cameras on the market now. If it's lit right.

Both digital and film, right now, will suffer a softness simply due to the fact that the final scans aren't high enough resolution.

Although, this year/early next year, we're getting a photochemical finish of a 70mm film (The Hateful 8).

That will be nice.

The Revenant for instance, is being shot in 6.5k...but it's still going to finish on 4K.

How is that pretentious?
>>
>>62763766
That's one good thing about Uno Keko, he has the money to pull out someone who can process film chemically. I heard that's near-impossible to find now.
>>
>>62763919

>The director is responsible for standardized frame rates

What's he meant to do?

Every director has to deal with that limitation.
>>
>>62763978

>Take shit, empty, hollow story with no substance.

>Shoot it in a manner that you associate with IMPORTANT AND SERIOUS DRAMA

>Have actors behave as if the moment is for the Oscar nomination show reel

It's literally pretentious. He puts on window dressing to make his films look more important than they are.

>>62764014

Even Tarantino has struggled recently. He couldn't get it done for Django. Labs wouldn't insure a bleach bypass anymore.
>>
>>62764028
He could decide to do a slower pan, or create a shot with less shit going on. All artisans work within the limitations, no one gets anywhere by pretending real limitations don't exist.

>Take shit, empty, hollow story with no substance.
What do you mean by substance?

>Shoot it in a manner that you associate with IMPORTANT AND SERIOUS DRAMA
Who is associating his style with "IMPORTANT AND SERIOUS DRAMA"? You or all of the audience?

>Have actors behave as if the moment is for the Oscar nomination show reel
Why do you immediately think about the Oscars when you see someone acting?

>literally
>literally
Do you literally talk like this in real life?

>>62764105
I guess that goes to show how risk-averse Hollywood has become. They did something literally constantly to do their jobs, then, as soon as something more stable comes along, they refuse to do it ever again, even if they're good at it.

Better then the tripe we got, it could have been an actually accurate and brutal story of life in Indian territory and instead we got goofy schlock. Fuck they could have even kept the canniblas and have just done it better. Everything else was great it was just the horrible mishandling of the final piece of the film. Sometimes it's better to go with a tried formula then something new that ends up being garbage.

Nobody said it yet because it really doesn't look that bad desu. I wonder how they did it.

I'm assuming they had to hand-animate all the bear's movements, because I just really doubt they would do motion capture with a live bear for this movie. And that's fucking artistry if it really is hand animated, because those movements look pretty real, if a little "over-acted" for what a real bear would do. This is what a real grizzly bear looks like when acting super-aggressive:
https://youtu.be/K-Tfq6dARGk?t=1m13s

CGI animals always look best when they have realistic animations and are blurred/are moving too fast for you to get a good look at them, which seems to be how you see the bear when it appears in this movie. So yeah, I see no problem with >>62754560

Mountain men didn't have straight, pearly-white teeth in the 1820s, and it would look out-of-place to show them with such.

That's beside the point, though. Dicaprio doesn't have any real teeth anyway; he changes to a new set of prosthetic teeth for every performance

Hm? His bottom teeth are shaped like everyone elses. If your lower front-teeth are not long and narrow, then it is YOU who is the freak.

But his gumline does indeed look a pretty receded (usually caused by smoking a lot, getting gum disease, and grinding or not caring for your teeth). Assuming it's not just some specFX or makeup, I don't know if Leo just purposefully did that for the movie or if he really is that unhealthy/unhygienic.

He would be raving about the cinematography if the Revenant were released as the same film as it is today by a bunch of unknown filmmakers/actors back in 2008 (who all quit making movies after releasing it). He'd only praise it if hardly anyone else knew about it but him, though. Once other people find out about a movie and start saying they think it's good, that means to him that it was actually a bad movie all along

Why would such a talented DP waste his time with such an awful filmmaker (Inarritu)?

Watching the Revenant trailer, it's obvious his floating camera & wide shots of nature are the only reasons to watch the film (thank you Terry) while everything else seems incredibly sophomoric and half-baked, you already know it's gonna have a long tracking shot during a battle, which is gonna be shot amazingly, but also completely gratuitous and ostentatious. A good filmmaker like Terry knows how to use his talents without gimmicks, and even a decent spic flickmaker like Cuaron knows how to use long takes for good reasons, without trying to seem like a serious artist. Inarritu belongs in the trash, he's an enemy of cinema
