He committed to making a movie based on his Dieter character from the Sprockets SNL sketch, made endless excuses about not being satisfied with his own script, and ended up burning a movie that was already cast and in pre-production.
You virtually NEVER do this because among other things it means having to cash in on a completion bond which in turn raises your studio's rates for getting said bonds in the future. Movies have resorted to editing and CGI over a lead actor's death before resorting to cashing a completion bond. It's career suicide if the reason is being a pissy little autist.
He was working with Ron Howard who basically stuck him in as many shitty movie roles after that (e.g. Cat in the Hat) as punishment afterward.
He'll get VA work as Shrek and cameos but he's dead fucking meat to Hollywood. Also he's a certified nutter; he could only read his love speech to Fiona with his then-wife present as he looked in her eyes; he got legitimately spooked by Heather Graham touching him in Austin Powers II, all over a woman he eventually dumped.
There were SNL writers who wanted to blackball him when he auditioned, take that into account.
They say he's difficult to work with.

The entire character of Shrek had to be rewritten to suit Myers after Chris Farley died.
While the result is beloved, the point remains that a CGI film in production had to restart a chunk of it because the anus of the pipeline decided it was the brain. It worked with Shrek but it was a warning sign.

The irony here is that while I can have a tantrum that he overstepped his bounds as an actor doing a studio a favor, the result was infinitely better than what Farley could have brought to the table. Farley's Shrek was a mildly tweaked version of Steig's material where the storyline revolved around his parents being terrible and Chris was obviously not challenging the material at all. It would have been amusing but not a franchise.
In the bigger picture though, it was a gamble he couldn't repeat, and he stupidly imagined dramatic cameos in productions like 54 would springboard him to bigger things.
