I agree. Though I thought the sex scene intertwined with the airport slaughter could have been done... differently. I get what he was going for but it just seemed over the top. Final shot of the Towers was perfect. An often overlooked masterpiece.

There's something about the way Spielberg shoots violence in serious films that's really disturbing. It's sort of grotesque and absurd. Reminds me of the lake scene in Zodiac, it just sticks with you.

He doesn't sensationalize, overdramatize, or add too much emotion to it. It just happens, it's over really quickly, and somebody's dead. He doesn't try to make it fun or cathartic like a Tarantino, and he knows he doesn't have to overplay it to make it jarring or disturbing. He just shows it for what it is.
The Coens are also very good at this. Violence is never badass, it's never over-the-top, it's just quick and brutal and nasty and unpredictable. Jew directors know how to depict violence
