It's not overrated considering it's a milestone in the anime industry. Deserves every bit of praise it gets.Rebuilds are to NGE what the prequels are to the original Star Wars trilogy tho.

This is one of my favorite animated scenes ever. Just the way they make every character have a real feeling of weight is amazing. You watch them fight and you can forget that they're all giant robots, but when you see 02 take a hit and then it cuts to Asuka getting rocked and thrown around the cockpit, you get a serious sense of weight and impact to all the hits.
