Oh shit, I just of one
Mulholland, Dr. Doesn't follow the formula
>Everyone in this ITT knows what the fuck it is
So I'm the only one who doesn't? Someone please explain with an example like hardly any movie has supernatural shit and stuff what the fuck
>>62745823
Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit are two movies that follow the hero's journey to a T yet are completely different in terms of setting/tone/style/etc.
Dark Knight Rise's has a literal abyss as the death/rebirth portion.
>>62745823
It's a general formula.
Take...well, let's go with The Matrix as a pleb example.
>Call to adventure
Follow the White Rabbit.
>Supernatural Aid (doesn't have to be actually supernatural)
Trinity up in the club
>Threshold Guardians
Agents.
>Threshold
Red/Blue Pill
>Mentor
Morpheus (no shit)
>Helper
Trinity
>Abyss
Neo is told he isn't The One
>Transformation
Fighting Smith in the train station
>Atonement
Trinity kisses Neo back to life, Neo beats Smith and the other Agents
>Return
Neo re-enters the Matrix, becomes superman

Star Wars
Psycho
I think a lot of mystery movies don't follow the Monomyth.
Anyway, monomyth hasn't been a thing for years. It's all about the BS2 now (Blake Snyder's Beat Sheet). There hasn't been a mainstream Hollywood movie who didn't follow the BS2 made in the last 15 years.

Disney Hercules follows this 100% literally. No symbolic interpretations at all.
Riki-oh
>>62746081
FUCK Blake Snyder. Seriously.
>>62746116
I agree. Fuck him and the people who think that a movie MUST follow his stupid Beat Sheet.
>>62746144
I'm an amateur screenwriter (read; idiot with Screenwriting software) and seeing that Save The Cat literally fucking everywhere bothers me like crazy.
>>62745680
Memento
>>62746438
Pull that apart in HandBrake and you can reorder that into Journey easy peasy.
Star Wars
12 Angry Men
literally most great movies are great because they have nothing to do with this
eraserhead
synecdoche new york
pulp fiction
mulholland drive
battle royale
twin peaks fire walk with me
offret
antichrist
alien
scream
melancholia
the shining
etc etc

The Shining.
Groundhog Day.
Les Mis.
In fact most horror movies don't follow this pattern - the approach to analysis only really works for romance derived stories like adventures, sf, fantasy, mysteries, detective stories and romances.
Horror and things derived from the gothic tradition ignore it completely.

>Groundhog Day.
You're kidding, right? It follows it note for note.
