It got too preachy for my taste. I've got nothing against fags, but the show does too much pandering to the gay crowd. Seems like every male on the show who isn't part of a family is a flaming honosexual.
Plus, the curse of all family sitcoms: the kids got older.

It's actually been the past few seasons, this season is slightly better. Take Phil for example, Phil was the best character in the first 3 seasons of Modern Family. His unintentional gay sexual innuendos, the running gag about the broken staircase, his constant breaking of the 4th-wall and his unwavering enthusiasm were what made his character great.
For the last 3 seasons, Phil doesn't even any of these things anymore, he's been flanderised to the point where even the writers don't what to do with him.
Same with Cam and Mitchell, all their subplots now just revolve around the fact that Cam/Mitchell do something that pisses each other off, and they're too much of a faggot to bring it up for the duration of the episode, only to finally confess about how much they hate what the other is doing at the end of the episode. There's NO character development, the only quirk about them is that they're gay and being fucking gay shouldn't be their only form of character development for the past 7 seasons.
I think the main reason is that they've exhausted all possible plot points and character development since the show's been running for 7 seasons. I continue watching just to see where the Andy/Haley relationship development goes since Sarah Hyland is fucking cute when she's sad and also for Ariel Winter's boobs.

It had been declining for a while, though, and I think the split between the showrunners might be to blame:

Would be the GOAT show if they take it in a brutally depressing direction, not sure exactly why I want to see this happen but I fantasize about the family completely breaking down once the kids move out
