Everything isn't supposed to be a step in the right direction. Just take the example of thackery's cure for addiction or the shrinks method of solving mental illness. The show often shows us the wrong steps we as a society has taken. Even things that are universally loved, like the subway, are shown to have a shady background in how people died or got mangled building it and the investors almost effortlessly finding ways of minimizing their losses.
