The only people these days who actually worship anything are christians, jews, muslims, hinduists, and some native americans who still worship their weird wolf/eagle gods.

there is no canon for mythology. That's one of the defining characteristics of mythology. Each city in Greece had its own stories, and those stories changed from one era to another and are added onto. And half of the time they're in direct contradiction with one another.
Romulus and Remus are treated as direct descendents of Aeneus, but Homer sure as fuck didn't write about them.
A good example is how Rome treated its war deity. In its early years it was mainly Bellona, who was cruel, destructive, chaotic, and overall symbolised the negative aspects of war. She wasn't directly worshiped, didn't have a temple in the city - just a small shrine outside of it. In the later years when Rome became successful in war and military service became an honourable profession and an essential part of the public life, suddenly you had Mars come into prominence as the chief war god, and he became crucial to the pantheon, had huge parts of the city named after him, and was seen as a force for prosperity rather than destruction. The mythology between Bellona and Mars changed drastically in this time as Bellona became a minor deity and her role in legends changed to push Mars into prominence
