I can see that.
For me there were scenes that really didn't need cutting. WHERE'S MY AXE illustrated a start contrast to the next day's dinner, where BOB was in the front seat. Extended also made Chester Desmond a more likable and interesting character for me, instead of just a replacement Cooper. Also gave the movie a more lighthearted Twin Peakslike tone, that only brought more contrast to when it got dark.
That was my personal take on it, but I can see the merits of the theatrical cut as well.

a demon. in the show he talks about how he used to visit some house when he was a kid and the neighbor was this creepy guy named bob. it's assumed that bob abused/molested him whenever leland's family visited so that's how he got possessed, he's just been bob's victim since he was a kid.

I always felt that was kind of a self aware joke on Lynches part. He's a director known for working with abstractions and symbols so Agent Cole, the character he plays, used abstractions and symbols to communicate the case to the two agents.
