If George Lucas is a bad director how come Episode IV is probably in the top ten greatest movies of all time?
>>
It's been rumored that the original Star Wars was a giant mess of a film that was saved in editing.

I don't know to what extent that's true though.

He's not a terrible writer, but he tends to leave plot holes in the movie, and often will edit out some pretty essential set-ups, particularly those in Episode II.

He probably should have done more to tie the prequels together.
>>
>purple screen

Is this going beyond blue and green?
>>
>>62704121
It was for Samuel Jackson getting thrown out of the window.

Pottery.
>>
I will never understand the amount of disdain people have for Lucas. Going as far as discrediting his work before the prequels. Lay off the guy.
>>
>>62703558
lucas says this on the documentary that comes came with one of the collecters editions, he said the first cut was a mess, he had to fire the editor because he wouldnt do what george wanted, and george and his then wife, who was editing some other movie, had to spend their weekends reediting a new hope
>>
>>62703558
>>62704245
It's true. Remember his wife won the Oscar for Editing SW. And she apparently put a lot of effort into it and thought it might kill his career.
>>
>>62703757

To some extent, yes. It depends on what kind of raw material there is to work with in the dailies. John Jympson's original cut was apparently atrocious (Jympson, a respected English editor, blamed Lucas for not communicating with him at all), so the film was entirely disassembled and reedited from scratch by the team of Marcia Lucas, Paul Hirsch, and Richard Chew.

It should be Episodes: 1,2,3,-3,-2,-1 t.b.h.
>>
>>62704196
He's kind of an asshole though.
>>
Lucas at the very least can make some absolutely memorable shots. He's shown that he can direct strong movies through American Graffiti and Star Wars, but he should NEVER, for ANY REASON be allowed anywhere near a writing role and should NEVER be given full creative control for ANY REASON.
>>
Because he had a team of quality control dudes back then.

Nowadays he surrounds himself with Yesmen that just take whatever awful things he suggests and scream internally.

Seriously, watch any production or making-of shit involving the the new trilogy. His team always have this horrified, pained expression on their faces and they don't do anything about it.
>>
He can't have a group of yes men around him

fucking this even so.

>His team always have this horrified, pained expression on their faces and they don't do anything about it.
Nah, you're projecting your own feelings onto them. That one webm of them all looking concerned when George is scribbling all over the storyboards in highlighter is actually just them being worried because George is asking them to do things that have never been done before - fully CGI characters, expansice CGI backgrounds - they think it's going to be an extremely difficult, seemingly impossible job, they're not thinking "this senile old man has lost his mind and is ruining star wars"
>>
>>62703499
yep its really something aint it
>>
>>62703558
It was, and the original script was even more ridiculous.

>>62703499
Age and greed. Same reason why Peter Jackson also directed one of the greatest film trilogies of all time, followed by one of the worst.
>>
I think filming in a blue screen environment really killed everything. As an actor, I can tell you that acting in a void is extremely difficult. The more detail there is on a set, the easier it is to invest yourself and develop a performance in the moment. The dialogue was bad enough, but when the actors don't even have a sense of where they are, they can't properly express themselves. It makes everything feel boring.
>>
The rewards for sincerity and hard work
>>
>>62704297
There is a lot of raw footage still rarely seen beyond the clips in the BTS fan films that have been put together. SW was complete saved in the editing room.
>>
>>62707752
>As an actor, I can tell you that acting in a void is extremely difficult.

Fuck off. You're not Ian McKellan and even he was talking shit espousing that nonsense. A green screen is no different than the black screen of EVERY SINGLE DRAMA SCHOOL AND CLASS for decades if not centuries and there's far more props and sets in your average Prequel scene than in original performances of Greek theater.

why was sheev so shit in the OT. Literally loses TWO death stars in 3 flicks. In the PT he literally does nothing wrong and goes from some meme politician from naboo to emperor in the space of 3 flicks.
>>
>>62708238
Greek theatres didn't have actors reacting to and having fights with imaginary characters.
They had another actor to play off with.

Switch 1 and 3 and you got it correct. Atleast 1 is consistent in its mediocrity, 3 starts out great then nosedives into pure garbage.

Why do people ignore THX 1138 & American Graffiti they're really good film and Lucas could be a good filmmaker. Star Wars did ruin his career he should have done what Spielberg did with Jaws and just leave the sequels/franchise to others and moved on with his career as a director.

American Graffiti is also fantastic and, might I add, beautifully shot.

>Why do people ignore THX 1138 & American Graffiti
Because people who are large fans of Star Wars don't watch many movies.
