Women don't handle most David Cronenberg films very well, but they seem especially put off by this one.
I think it has to do with that weird instinct that causes women to get hysterical when their husband/boyfriend has to man up and kick some ass or even just tell someone off in public. They act like olive oil from popeye.

Unfair stereotypes are the best kind of stereotypes. 4chan thrives on them.
Also there really are "chick flicks" and "guy flicks". This upsets the SJWs but overall gender roles still exist in our society and films that cater to them tend to perform well.
Men really do find chick flicks to be cringeworthy. There will be a token scene where the women come together in some light hearted moment, with a catchy song playing on the radio, and they will end up singing into an icecream scoop or some other improvised microphone. They then talk about their feelings and the man dies a little inside.
In guy films there will come a point in the movie where "there is killin' to be done. Woman, don't even think about trying to stop me!" These movies work even better when there is no woman around to second-guess the male protagonist. THis is especially true for war movies as women are guaranteed to ruin every single war film they appear in.
Until society eliminates all traces of gender roles these films will continue to be made.
