Best Horror Remake 2000-2015???
http://strawpoll.me/5992032
Thanks!
>>
Evil Dead was highly enjoyable. They separated it enough from the original so it could stand on its own which is the key to a successful remake. Plus the practical effects were insane.
>>
The Ring hands down. No other movie on that list has become nearly as culturally relevant.
>>
Hills have Eyes.

Based Aja.
>>
I am gonna rank all the ones I have seen except the Ring as I remember very little of it altho I recall it being good.

> The Grudge
> The Crazies
> Dawn of the Dead
> The Hitcher
> Friday the 13th
> My bloody Valentine 3d
> The Wolf Man
> Halloween
> The Hills Have Eyes
> A Nightmare on elm street
> One Missed Call
>>
Dawn of the Dead, obviously.

Only one on the list better than the original.

>the crazies
damn good movie
>the hitcher
Mah waifu
>evil dead remake
fuck totally forgot about it
>dawn of the dead
that one has to be excluded since its based.

ALL THESE CHOICES
>>
Dawn of the Dead is good, as is The Hills Have Eyes.

Other than those, nothing sticks out for me.

Although this is an example of an incorrect opinion, it is true that both original and remake are solid, entertaining films.

These are not nostalgia goggles. This is an honest, straightforward comparison of the films on their individual merits, from which there is no honest escape. There is no ontological difference between 1978 and 2004: tribalism, the black-comedy comment on consumerism, acknowledging the reality of the death of your friends and neighbors, watching it with your very eyes, and the need to then mutilate them.

Now to trot out the nostalgia, plus the real tiebreaker: 1978 has the Gonk, Tom Savini, and a bit more levity and less snark, which are welcome in a drama to offset all the Drama. But the levity also serves to make the low lower, as the novelty of the mall wears off, and reality sets back in. This both gets us to empathize more deeply with the smaller cast of bodies (who are less fungible), and makes the critique of consumerism more poignant. 1978 was the first film to my knowledge to explore a /sustained/ existence in the face of a zombie outbreak, the real break with the original which is what has really been permuted and absolutely beatenflayedshot to death ever since.

The original Dawn of the Dead is the true Great Zombie Movie.

>Dawn of the Dead, obviously.
>Only one on the list better than the original.
The Wolf Man is better than the original!
None of the universe monster movies except Creature from the black lagoon, Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein hold up all that well, they are good mind you, but rarely great except those 3.

>someone voted Rob Zombies Halloween

Fucking what? Why?
>>
>>62684250
Also meant to say, the Hammer remakes improved in every way on their respective series except Curse of the werewolf which was just ok while The original Wolf Man was good.
>>
If we're talking about a movie that actually improved on the original then it's The Hills Have Eyes. No question. If we're talking about a remake that took the original material, didn't make a better movie, but was still a great stand alone horror movie then it's Rob Zombie's Halloween. Anyone saying Dawn of the Dead or The Evil Dead are absolute morons. Neither comes close to surpassing the original or being a memorable remake.

>Rob Zombie's Halloween
>great stand alone horror movie

This is a joke right?

The cinematography is so fucking garbage I can't tell whats happening in screen most of the time. The camera is too close up on shit that i cant tell whats in front of me

All the characters are unlikable and deserved their deaths. I don't care about any of these characters. All the women are fucking sluts. Is this seriously what Zombie think teenage girls are like? Making jokes about sex in front of their parents at the fucking dinner table?

Out of no where comes this scene where two hicks go into Michael's room and just rape a woman in it. Like fucking what?

We spend so much time with Michael that by the time that he's in the mask and jumpsuit the audience doesn't fucking care anymore and start falling a sleep.

Not even the death scenes are enjoyable. If you're not gonna make your horror movie scary at least make up for it in entertainment value with the kills.
>>
Where's mother's day?
>>
>>62684508
>If we're talking about a movie that actually improved on the original then it's The Hills Have Eyes. No question.
The 2010 Crazies was absolutely better than the original.
>>
>>62684747
That's a lot of text for not really saying anything.

Your cinematography argument makes it obvious you don't even know what cinematography is.
Characters don't have to be likable. You may hate them but their lifestyles influence their motives. If you don't think teenage girls, especially poor girls, are sluts then you're more oblivious about modern day society than you are films.
You spend so much time with Michael that you understand what pushed him over the edge. You may not agree with a slasher villain having a backstory that may or may not lead you to sympathize with him, but you understand why he's doing it. That's a logical and good direction to go when remaking a movie like Halloween, where it was explained that Michael Myers was "evil personified".
Rob Zombie's use of practical effects trumps every single CGI blood splat in every other shitty remake that was listed here.

>>62684856
Agreed. It wasn't a better movie than The Hills Have Eyes remake, though.
>>
>evil dead 2013 in the lead
Well that's it. This place is infected with Redditors.
>>
>>62685017
what would you rather be in the top spot?
>>
>>62685017
What's even worse is that 4 people here actually exist who think Let Me In was better than Let the Right One In.

If this poll accomplishes anything it's definitive proof that /tv/ knows fuck-all about horror movies. It's like if there were a poll about romantic comedies on /b/.
>>
>>62685042
The Crazies
>>
>>62685017
its no surprise that the most recent movie is #1

everyone knows that the most current movie is always the best cause recent = quality
>>
>>62685068
I know I saw it but i dont remember much. I've never seen the original though
>>
>>62685097
but that's exactly why all those movies in the poll are better than the originals
>>
>>62685142
more people here have seen evil dead. that's why they're voting for it. the same shit happens whenever there's a best movies list made here.

My favorite scene is when Nancy finds all the child porn she starred in inside freddy's old lair.

thanks..uhh...Samuel Bayer....for that. That was so necessary to the movie. There was no way around it
>>
The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left, Dawn of the Dead.

Hills Have Eyes is fucking amazing
>>
>>62685234
The original opening and the original ending would have made the movie slightly better
>>
>>62684508
The Poll is asking what is the best movie that happens to be a horror remake made between 2000-2015.

>>62685060
>What's even worse is that 4 people here actually exist who think Let Me In was better than Let the Right One In.
NO, the poll isn't asking which remake was better than the original, The can think Let me in was the best film on the list and think the original is superior to it.

>>62685097
>its no surprise that the most recent movie is #1
Poltergeist is newer.

>>62685142
But a bunch of them are not better at all.

I voted for The Ring

but Maniac with Elijah Wood was a fantastic remake not on the list.
>>
>>62685242
Dawn of the Dead remake is shit. The Last House on the Left is leagues ahead of the original. That one and The Hills Have Eyes are hands down the best remakes of the originals.
>>
>>62685261
the original ending had neater effects for pulling freddy into the real world, plus the part where he stabs her in the shoulder was cool, shifting between dream and reality while it happens
>>
>>62685234
Why is that a bad element to add to a alternate version of the story?
And don't go off on that ludicrus argument that it makes Freddy unlikable, he was a mass child murderer in the original, that is probably worse.
>>
>>62685294

And they did that like five minutes after they came to the conclusion that Freddy was innocent and they murdered him with no proof.
>"We were kids! We would have said anything!"

What was the fucking point of trying to make Freddy sympathetic and teasing the possibility that he was innocent if they were just going to "LOL NOPE" it away like that? Was it the writer's terrible idea for a plot twist or something?

Did none of the parents think to check Freddy's bedroom for proof?
>>
>>62685278
If people think Evil Dead is the best movie out of all of those then the people voting for it are even more stupid. No one has seen the Poltergeist remake.

>>62685335
Watch it. The tone of the original is all over the place. The music is terrible and the two bumbling cops don't fit or even belong in that movie.
>>
>>62685314
cause if you're gonna do an alternate version of Freddy, and have this subplot where its a mystery as to if Freddy actually did molest, it would be a better decision to make freddy innocent

Also i just want to go on a tangent about one thing that really fucking irks me with this movie.

When the film was coming out, they had some info in a magazine where they were talking about this scene they shot where Freddy is reading them the pied piper to a room full of children. The children were crying and shit while he was reading this.

That sounds like a legitimate creepy scene if done right. Just imagine Freddy tuning the pages with his razor glove.

BUT NO IN THE MOVIE THEY DONT SHOW ANY OF THAT AND REPLACE IT ALL WITH A JUMP SCARE FUCK THIS MOVIE

There are some damn good ones in there but nothing in there comes even a light year close to the 1970s/80s remakes of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing & The Fly.
>>
>>62685494
either make him innocent for the sake of changing it up, or flat out dont have the sub plot at all.

I propose that we all vote for friday the 13th since were are literally two hours away from friday 13
>>
>>62685578
eh, the remake is a normal Friday the 13th movie just without the likable characters. There's definitely good things about it and its not the worst in the series but there are better horror remakes
>>
>>62685531
ive never seen the original the think or the fly but the remakes are my favourite horror movies are the originals worth seeing?
>>
>>62685682
Eh I think the whole group that gets killed in the opening was likable, the Supernatural guy was too, and the Main girl of the 2nd group and the Asian and black guy was likable.
Part 7 was much worse in the unlikable department as only the carrie chick and the main guy are likable.
>>
>>62685702
Oh yes, the Original The Thing from another world was among the top 1950s sci-fi films.

Haven't seen the original the fly.
>>
>>62682549

Evil Dead was enjoyable but not good by any metric.

It belongs to TCM or DotD.
>>
>>62685974
What the hell was good about the TCM remake?

Other than the more grizzly mask for Leatherface I can't think of anything

also RIP Gunnar Hansen
>>
>>62686092
Jessica Biel was good.
Evil Sheriff was a great idea.
Whole films look was great.
>>
I never saw the original The Ring, was it better than the american one?

il have to see it
>>
Evil Dead was good if you look at it as a stand-alone movie and don't try to compare it to the original.
>>
>>62685060
Let Me In isn't better than the original, but it's a hell of a lot better than anything on that list.
>>
>>62686300
Not even close
>>
>>62686092

It was better than the original in literally every way.
>>

yeah the re-make of Fright Night is the only re-make I am on the fence about. I can't decide whether it's better or worse than the first. It is a good film in it's own right but. One thing though it didn't quite have the atmosphere of the first.

Re-makes, to me, are never better than the original.

Wolf Man was a close second to Evil Dead.
>>
>>62685494
I actually with the other anon.
It adds more spice to his revenge if you're putting the subplot in.

Evil Dead is the only one I've seen and it's also the only one that I hear is even remotely worth watching. It was actually pretty dang good.

>>
Let Me In or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Those are the only ones I've seen tbhh but Let Me In has a great atmosphere and TCM is pretty fucking creepy.

Friday the 13th was essentially a perfect remake. It added enough new things to freshen up the formula, while not completely changing everything to the point of being unrecognizable

Am I the only one that thought the Evil Dead remake was fucking trash? Just a shit ton of gore for shock value with no real substance or scares, and totally lacking in the charm that made the first Evil Dead movie so great.

I remember leaving the theater more annoyed than anything else.
>>
>>62694955
Also, the tunnel system was fun
>>
>>62682549
Why isn't the Blob on there?
>>
>>62691247

Fright Night 2011 is decent as it's own thing, but pales in comparison to the original. That movie is pure fun, it's got everything. Great effects, great jokes, lots of homages to classic horror, really memorable characters, the works.

I rewatched it recently and it holds up remarkably well.

Really a damn shame that it's impossible to get it on Bluray for a reasonable price, because I'd pick it up to add it to my collection in a heartbeat.
>>
>>62688159
>>62688637

Not that guy, but I totally agree that it definitely falls on the good end of the spectrum.

I went in expecting absolutely nothing, and got a really solid little movie that subverted most cliches and my personal expectations for it.

Also, I loved the motel scene. Real brutal stuff.
>>
>>62695046
I thought it was just mediocre.
What I really felt it was missing was how fucking assholish the deadites can be.

In the original, Cheryl never shuts the fuck up.
In the remake Not-Cheryl just grunts.
>>
>>62685234

This is the only film on this list that made me legitimately angry after watching it.

It's painfully bad, you know your fucking movie has problems when your audience is falling asleep in NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET film.

So much wasted potential, as NoES is one of the few franchises to be rebooted that could actually benefit heavily from a remake thanks to modern special effects and advancements in what we know about sleep science/dreams.

Watching The Nightmare made these feelings of anger come back, as it made me realize we'll never get new Nightmare on Elm Street movie with crazy surrealistic visuals and sleep paralysis style horror.
