There was no continuity with how the dream levels should react to the outside. There was no reason for him to not just have his kids come to him. The entire movie is just continuous exposition through dialogue. I could keep going but the last one is the worst. The only reason people like it is because it gave them the impression that they were figuring things out. The movie leads by the hand through it so you don't actually realize how it makes no sense.
