what was this film's message?
>>62674815
Evil is unstoppable
>>62674815
Read a fucking book.
Tommy Lee Jones forgot to take his meds
That there is no country for old men

Llewyn jones isn't in fact the protagonist
>>62674815
LIfe sucks.
>>62674914
"Old white men" being a meme doesn't make those old white men themselves any better. Men like Tommy Lee Jones killed the world.
I would really like some one to tell me what the point of this whole movie was. I really like the Coen brothers, and they're movies are usually pretty great. Everyone kind of gets their own thing from the films, but I literally took away nothing from No Country for Old Men other than maybe they phoned it in. But everyone loved it.
>>62674967
stop trying so hard la'
>>62674923
Well also he came back to give the wetback water and they found his truck
You can't run from your past
>>62674967

Never piss off a mexican cartel
Don't take shit that doesn't belong to you
Stay the fuck away from anyone with this kind of haircut
>>62674986
I thought exactly the same, maybe we should read the book?
It's main message is that most men don't naturally get wiser as they get older, and this is said by tommy lee jones's final speech, that he always thought that one day he would be like his father when he was a sheriff, meaning that one day he would deal with things as easily as his father did. But even when he reached maybe the same age that his father had, that day wouldn't come.
So he ends the movie fearing for the future, because he didn't grow enough as a man and clearly isn't ready for this world that grows and changes too fast.
It's almost like there'sno country for old men
Fucking faggot ass homos think the world hasn't turned to a way more fucked up place than what it used to be.
Goddamn mongs are wrong.
>>62675672
Cool post bro
>>62674815
There's a country out there that kills all men before they grow old.
This >>62675636
"Times change faster than people do"
It's also about evil, and Anton externalizes his own evil to an amorphous force of "fate," which Carla Jean refuses to indulge in when she declines the opportunity of the coin toss, "The coin don't have no say. It's just you." Shortly afterward, Anton gets hit by a car in a random accident.
>>62675922
but he got there the same way the coin did
don't stick your head in other people's business
>>62674986
>>62675114
I always interpreted it as a movie about death and the way people deal with it. Bardem's character is the personification of death, some try to run from him, some try to fight him, some just accept their fate.
I also thought the fact that he was willing to decide people's fate with a coin flip was telling, like it reinforced the idea that death is random and uncaring.
You can't stop what's coming
A coyote won't eat a mexican

Same here, to me it just felt like them checking "dark country noir" off of their bucket list.

" The times they are a-changin' "
What was the message?
>>62674815
Latino criminals from across the border are coming to wipe out authentic American culture and people. Build a wall. Coen brothers have always been anti-Latino.
Fucking Mexicans
>>62679213
That theres only one thing stranger than what's going on inside his head.

>>62679213
This one has a lot of messages going on, and they're pretty simple to catch up
Find the right to for the job.
Death is inevitable
DEEP AS FUCK OBV
It's about the inevitable chaos of life son, and the ultimate meaninglessness behind it all.
>the last monologue from Tommy
Everything comes to an end, familia. The times, they are a-changin.
The *ONLY* interesting part of that movie was Chigurh.
Why does a flim need to have a "message"? It was just a somewhat interesting story whose villain had a very odd obsession/relationship with fate. Chigurh's car crash is particularly interesting because it mostly demonstrates that he is does not "control" his fate.
Things always been same, this level of evil has always been around but it's a young man's game.
>>62679118
I cant believe it took this long for someone to say it.. The film's message is perfectly summarized by it's tagline as seen in the poster:
>"There are no clean getaways."
This is a movie that presents itself as firmly planted in the real world, where there is no such thing as plot-armor. The hero is just as likely to be killed by Mexican gangsters as anyone else who steals millions of dollars from them would be in real life. Even the least realistic character in the movie - Chigurh, the "hitman of doom" - is vulnerable to random chance shit like car accidents, and getting hit with a few pellets of buckshot in the leg fucked him up badly, just like it would any other human.
NCFOM takes what people have come to expect from the movies and flips that expectation upside down. On first viewing you never can predict what is going to happen next, and the tension is fucking real. It pulled this off with almost no music, too. It's still my favorite film, and it likely will remain so for many more years before something can possibly unseat it.
I was gonna make a thread but since this is here I was wondering the same thing about The Big Lewbowski. Does it have a point at all?
>>62678527
I came here to say this.
Probably a thread better suited for /lit/.
It fits well within both McCarthy's work and the Coen Bros, who both tell stories where characters try contrive some meaning or narrative arc to the chaos of life. The film belongs to Ed Tom. He is settled in his ways and deluded as well, confident in his presumptions not only about the case but of life. Throughout the film he is constantly fumbling in his work, and muses on tangents in which he tries to extrapolate some rhyme and reason, all while major clues stare him in the face unnoticed.
Ultimately the film is about getting old and facing up to failure. Llewlyn Davis is the hero that never was, Icarus drowning in the water. Chigurh is just a madman whose actions seem mythic, but are in fact human.
The movie is not about how things are getting worse or whatever.
>>62682997
Yeah, bumping. This thread so far is much better than it has any right to be
>>62682997
It's interesting how it compares to the border trilogy. For all it's darkness, i feel there's still some sort of hope and feeling of human decency in those books.
In no country, its almost completely dark.
>What is the message of this film?
How can I reduce every piece of art to didactic trash that tries to hammer one point into my brain?
Movies, books, and all art can be ABOUT things and touch on themes without having an easily digestible point. C'mon /tv/

>>62679076
>Coen's Blood Meridian
Shit would be glorious
>>62685822
checked and also who would they cast as the Judge?
It was a movie that demonstrated that one's entire worldview could be upset by one man.
An entire culture of the Texas town could be destroyed by one beaner willing to murder a man for a nickel.
Bringing up blood meridian is a great point. Civilization isn't a real thing. It's an idea. Cormac McCarthy is great at pointing that out.
>>62674986
Phoned it in? Jesus, loser, every other line is pure heart-breaking poetry. It's all about the writing. You literally did not get it.

>>62682437
It's not WHAT a movie is about that matters. It's HOW a movie is about it.
And I'd wager that zero Coen brothers movies have a "point" because intentionally making a point with your movie is just bad writing.
The point of the Big Lebowski is le random humor.

That the whole idea of law, order and justice are basically meaningless since some things are so evil, powerful and incomprehensible as to render the attempt at order utterly futile.
>>62678271
This is a good interpretation, but I read it as not necessarily Death but just a personification for the uncaring nature of the whole universe.

>>62674815
That terrible shit happens no matter what and that the 'golden age' idea that people have when they get older, that times were better when they were younger, is BS. But it's also saying that the idea is a natural part of your life and that everyone dies believing that the world is going to shit.
Just be yourself
>>62674986
>>62674815
I'll bite
When Ed Tom goes to talk to his crippled uncle, he complains how he can't just keep going. his uncle tells him a pasionate story on how someone got fucked up 100 years ago and how things has always been fucked up regarless Ed Tom's view that things have gone to the shitter.
the point he makes is that that place is a HARD LAND, always been and always has. A lot of people live their lives in a minefield without knowing it. For example the mexicans fucking love death and most of them don't know it or choose to ignore it.
In the end Ed Tom learns that he's not in capacity to change the course of a river, the river has been flowing long before Ed Tom had been born and it will keep flowing after his demise.
Fucking Cormack McCarthy is a fucking poet. Just like the road, one of the outlining messages is how we are hopeless in the world that is presented to us and how somehow we live under the ilussion that we can influence it.
Ed Tom and Lewellyn Moss' stories are somewhat parallel, they are both running out of time.
>>62674815

the point about this film is that making it in the music industry is all about luckand not being a massive cunt
>>62674815
The message is that if you find 2 million shekels, just take it and go. don't return to the scene of the crime.
I assume the country they are referring to is somewhere in Africa where the oldest person is 15
>>62674967
WHO KILLED THE WORLD THEN????
The message is to Deport all illegal Mexicans. If there were no Mexican cartels none of this would've happened in the first place. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. BUILD WALL. TRUMP 2016!
bad people gunna bad
>>62691307
2 million USS (united states shekels)
I think it's about how evil is incomprehensible and limitless and people who try to make sense of the world will inevitably fail. Tommy Lee Jones's speech is about how he has realized that he can't make sense of the world or the violence in it.
>>62674815
That this isn't 'No Country for Old Men' today

Read the poem "sailing to Byzantium" by yates. That's basically the meaning. The movie is about Tommy lee jones character.

>>62674815
If you have to ask this then likely you didn't comprehend the film's aesthetic, and never will, since this takes nothing more than basic image-reading skills.
Perhaps you need a film that speaks to you directly in order to fully understand it.
Partly to take control of your life and don't let a sense of fate control you, partly a message about the inevitable fact of aging and irrelevance
