What does /tv/ think of Zodiac (2007)? One of Fincher's best, imo.
>>
>>62674470

It's so amazing that I can't believe Fincher made it. He's pretty solid in general but Zodiac is just so far above everything else he's made. One of the best films of the last decade I'd say.

>>
That scene was chilling.
>>
>>62674486
The best thing is the research he did on this. I watched all background footage and behind the scenes shit and he basically reopened the case for himself and went investigating. Zodiac was a killer that would put false leads on other people. Also, that cinematography and music was great, and the cgi better than some movies today. Very matter of fact story telling.
>>
Robert Downey Jr was great in this
>>
Its still on my top 5 movies of all time. The suspense it builds even though you know nothing will happen is unbelieveable.

Most tense/comfy film of Fincher.

It scared the living shit out of me. Especially the scene in OP. It's insane that shit like that even happens in real life.

best scenes are people discussing the case in cafés and 60s restaurants. So much going on
>>
>>62675155
People are perverts, as Fincher himself said. Same guy who directed Social Network.. fitting. Either way when people ask me, what movies are like Gone Girl / Prisoners / Nightcrawler, I recommend them this. It's so good. Dark, brooding, realistic.
>>
This film is good, but Fincher's best? No way.
Its memorable scenes and subject matter carry it somewhat.

Nowhere near the level of The Social Network.

I think Fincher's best is The Social Network, but Zodiac is a truly great film. The scene in the OP is so tense. Also I love how long and detailed it is. It really feels like decades go by too, like The Shawshank Redemption.

>>
>>62675907

This is what Fincher babbys tell themselves. Maybe you should watch an actually good thriller like Cache and then compare to Fincher's boring entertainment.
>>
>>62675985

why do you keep referring to Zodiac as a thriller? it does not try to be a thriller at all. there are tense moments but that's about it.

Cache is also not a thriller.

Also stop comparing random films to one another when they have absolutely nothing in common.
>>
>>62675985
Zodiac is Fincher's only good movie and I vastly prefer Haneke too, but you'd have to be a tarantino video game autistic to like the first half of zodiac but then get bored when the actual point of the movie starts.
>>
>>62676078
Both those movies are absolutely thrillers. What do you think a thriller is? They don't have to be fast-paced. and of course the two movies have little in common, but referring to them as thrillers can show how they break away from the vast majority of films in that genre.
>>
Very good transitions in time, like in True Detective
>>
>>62674505
>chilling
This doesn't mean anything.

And then scene was awesome. You are only upset because a broad was involved.
>>
>>62676215

>referring to a movie by a genre title that it doesn't fit nicely into shows how they're not like that genre

again, why do you have to conceive of movies based on what genre they fit into? and again, what does Zodiac have to do with Cache? stop making odious, worthless comparisons that are tantamount to "nuh uh this one movie that is also about a mystery is better than that unrelated movie about a mystery"

I usually find Fincher's movies mediocre but really enjoyed Zodiac. His best in my opinion, can't believe David was the one who made it.
>>
It's quite a unique film. All the murdering happens in the first hour and then gives way to the paranoia and obsession of those attached to the case. It's clearly not an easy film to make.

The way Fincher works through a convoluted case over so many years, keeps the audience engaged and creates tension when we know there's no definitive conclusion is masterful.
>>
>>62676959
>>62677239

What are you trying to convey?

Agreed. It could have ended up as a movie that only appealed to true crime buffs that are familiar with the case but it's suspenseful enough that it works for everyone.

The genius of Zodiac is that it starts out as a thrilling murder mystery and instead of building to a predictable crescendo it sort of spins out of control like the mind of the obsessed main character himself. The audience gets swept up in the twists and turns of the investigation but there are no cliche surprises really. Everything is very grounded and honest. The filmmakers didn't go for gasps, they went for truthfulness.

In the third act it resists the Hollywood temptation for a big climactic ending that ties up all the loose ends and instead it ends after a strange, innocuous confrontation between the main character and the suspected Zodiac killer which I think is a stroke of genius. It's not a film like most Hollywood films that is supposed to have a message or is supposed to leave the audience feeling like they won or something. It's a serial killer movie where you don't catch the serial killer. Instead, we just get an honest look at these characters and how this situation and this obsession effected their lives.

And yet somehow it's still thrilling and utterly compelling which is a testament to Fincher's prowess. 10/10, amazing film.

It wasn't Arthur Leigh Allen, like this dishonest movie tried to push. It almost definitely wasn't any of the famous suspects, honestly.

It's still great as a movie, though. It's just not as historically accurate as most people think it is.
>>
>>62679376
Watching that scene in isolation can't compare to watching within the context of the movie with all the dead ends and red herrings he's come across to that point.
>>
>>62679413
Why wasn't it him? I've yet to hear any definitive proof that it wasn't him in any Zodiac discussion threads. Is there stuff I haven't seen?
>>
>>62679473
The handwriting, DNA, and finger/palm prints don't match. I guess it's still possible that it's him, but the evidence for him being guilty isn't strong enough to make it likely. Don Cheney has proven to not be trustworthy.
>>
>>62679846
>DNA

I thought he didn't like the taste of stamps and therefore never put them on letters himself?

>handwriting

Wasn't the frustration with this that ALA was ambidextrous and the expect was an unreliable drunk?

I don't know enough about the finger prints.
>>
Robert Greysmith got the wrong guy. He's even admitted that he no longer believes that Arthur Leigh Allen was the Zodiac.

The real Zodiac was Richard Gaikowski: http://www.zodiackiller.com/SuspectGaikowski.html.
>>
>>62676258

You remind me of my in-laws.
>>
>>62680337
These are some things pushed by Graysmith and the movie that cause people to think it was Allen.

The ambidextrous thing was a stretch to begin with, and they got samples from his other hand later on that ruled him out. Other handwriting experts have said it wasn't him.

The stamp thing could be true or it could be bullshit.
>>
>>62679376
The basement scene was great but then there was zero follow up. The movie is fantastic otherwise but that bothered the hell out of me.
>>
>>62674609
it was funny when the sheriff from the lake killing took the crew to the spot so they could scout it out and fincher starts wandering around, looking at dirt. then he tells everyone they went to the wrong area and points over to where the killings actually took place and the sheriff realized Fincher was right.
>>
>>62678707
Its only "conspiracy theory" until you realize how easy it is falsify evidence.
>>
>>62680579
graysmith is certifiably retarded though. He keeps changing who it is as people related to the case die.
>>
>>62679413
The movie doesn't actually say that it was Allen. It leads you to believe it is, only to casually undermine that interpretation in the end. The film isn't about who the killer is, but about the failure and delusion of the main characters.

I mostly agree with this, too. I think it's great that the movie lets you see the case the way Graysmith does. The problem is that the movie doesn't quite undermine it as much as they should at the end, that's why so many people walk away thinking that ALA was the Zodiac.

Excellent film. I was stunned when I found out the levels of cgi that were used in some scenes. This shot of the taxi is perfect and then I found out that they were on a sound stage and recreated the intersection using cgi for the background. This film is a modern classic.
